Money back from energy companies

We are with EDF on a smart meter. We are £978 in credit, yet EDF won't let me put my direct debit down when I try doing this on my account. I got fed up and emailed them saying £978 is too much to be in credit and we are suffering financial hardship. Within 24 hours we had £500 put back in our account.

Moral: Email energy companies and ask for your credit back. Why should they be holding so much of our money?

I got my whole account credit back from EDF recently with no problems (£350, took my account to zero). Better in my bank account than theirs!

Yes same here. Just a quick email.

Tell your energy company you will contact Ofgem if they don’t get it sorted.

I got so fed up with this over the years. It seemed the most straightfoward way was to switch suppliers to force the repayment. Now I pay on receipt of quarterly bill - it saves so much time and bother. I put money aside every month and earn interest on it - I'm not so fabulously rich that I can lend money to massive corporations free of charge!

Octopus you just request it in the app. You've reminded me I need to do so, they have £1000 of mine sitting there.

Change your electric company? Some will
only charge you for what you use.
i did this and got the amount I was in credit for refunded soon after the switch
