Hi, I am trying to work out what is the cheapest way to drive the two cars we have in our family - but I don't know what to do with the figures I have. Do I divide them? Multiply them? I have no idea!

What I am trying to do is to find out how much 1000 driving miles would cost with these three driving formats:

  1. Diesel car. It's average consumption is 46.7 mpg. I pay 1.55 per litre for its diesel.
  2. Phev car. It achieves 42mpg on it's 'hybrid' mode when it using petrol + electric. It's petrol is 1.46 here.
  3. Same phev car. It can use its pure-electric mode. It costs me £3.27 to charge it fully (I have one of those plugs that calculates this for you) which gives me 39 miles of driving.

Can someone please (pretty please) do the sums so I work out how much each of these three ways costs me to drive?

Many thanks

Are you doing 1,000 miles in a single journey like a holiday or, at the other end of the spectrum, relatively short shopping and commuting?

In other words how much can you do in electric mode in the PHEV.

Assuming those average mpg hold for the 1000 miles you are driving, I get:

Diesel: £150
Hybrid: £157
Electric: £84

I'm happy to be told I've got it wrong tho!

I think 3 is cheapest per mile, 1st two are very similar.

1 is £7.05 for 46.7 miles, 15p a mile
2 is £6.64 for 42 miles, 16p a mile
3 is £3.27 for 39 miles, 8p a mile

I rounded to get per mile amount so for 1000 miles I'd say same as @BuddingPeonies

Fabulous! Exactly what I wanted to find out. Love this nest of vipers. 😂Thank you

Is your time also money? You’ll have to recharge your electric car 26 times to do 1000 miles. How long does each charge take?

The question is how often your journey exceeds the electric range and what charge setup you have.

A daily roundtrip commute of 25 miles the charge time is irrelevant if the car is just charged overnight at home.
