Public Service Announcement: ways to save on Tesco and Amazon

Hey, I've saved a couple of quid in the last 24 hrs by:

  1. cancelling my Amazon prime. Even though I'd paid a year upfront, they have refunded part of my £95. I've shoved this into Premium Bonds for next month!
  2. changing my tesco delivery pass to off-peak and a 12 month contract. Down from 7.99 to 3.99/month.

Good thread… hopefully other people will post some other savings they’ve done too

BrainInAJar · 03/02/2024 18:28

Thanks @Christmastree455555 ! I've always thought I was relatively thrifty but it's easy to overlook things. I think it's important to genuinely sit down and go through every single direct debit at least once a year. Even the ones you THINK you can't get lower or can't do without.

Ocado has delivery for 99p on Wednesdays, so I alternate with Tescos cheapest delivery slot in order to get the best offers.

changed netflix to the one with ads so now only £4.99 month. the ads are short and encourage me to get off the sofa and move for a bit. kids whinged. i said they can pay the difference if they want ad free. it's not been brought up again!

I had no idea that was an option and I'm going to look into that, thanks!

I changed from a delivery pass to Clubcard plus. Still £7.99/month but I get 10% (max of £20 each shop) off two shops in store so I do two huge shops a month of c£200 each and save £40/month on my shopping. It works for us as we spend more than that a month (and I have the time to do it which is the main thing).

I can’t bring myself to get rid of Amazon prime at the moment…we have so much tied into it. I think it’s still saving us money overall but need to go over it again before it renews.

I cancelled prime, Netflix, Disney plus, Apple TV. Paid some guy £70 for a fire stick and it has everything and more on it.

AndThatWasNY · 06/02/2024 07:48

Joined Blue Light as work for an emergency service and made loads on Asda with the Asda card (£10 a month if spent £50 I think plus other bits) saved £63

Our Aldi Lidl and Tesco are 3 mins apart so go and get all the cheap veg for that week and base meals around them and stuff in the cupboard.

Do a "eat the cupboards bare" every couple of months.

Mumsnut · 06/02/2024 07:49

Fire stick? Tell me more …

heldinadream · 06/02/2024 07:50

Never had paid Amazon Prime but have had at least 10 free trials or 99p trials. They offer this to me regularly and I take it up if the order is time-critical, use the trial to the max while I have it and cancel before any payment.
Works for me!

BrainInAJar · 06/02/2024 11:48

Yes, the couple of times a year that I take out a month of Netflix, I take out the "with ads" option. I don't find there's a lot of ads.

You can do this with Disney too. I reduced my monthly sub to £5 before the price hike end of last year - annoying I didn't see it in the first place!

todayshappening · 06/02/2024 13:07

Mumsnut · 06/02/2024 13:36

sleepismyhobby · 06/02/2024 16:00
