Those ads in private eye..do they work?

@oiltrader Private Eye have ads in the “Eye Want” section of the classifieds where people ask for support, often just putting their bank details and a little biography.

I know someone who did this when he was raising money for experimental treatment of his wife's serious (eventually fatal) illness. Didn't get anything.

My banking app won't let me pay into an account unless I have the recipient's full name. I don't think just putting the sort code and account number in the advert would enable people to pay money to you. Can you still do this at a branch?

I don't know if people would actually donate. I'd love to know if they do work.
