What would you make of this? (Energy usage)

Blue is gas usage and orange is electricity.

All seems to be roughly the same usage each day, we use a fair bit, work from home a lot and young children.

Except we were not home on the 25th and 26th. Turned the boiler off and everything else switched off at the wall. The only thing left on was the fridge freezer and the virgin box?

We were away for a week over Christmas - left the heating on 14 throughout, turned off wifi etc. First three days cost just over £2, went up n 25 to over £4, steadily rising to £6.88 (!) on the 27th. Maybe the cost of the baseline things that are always on increased as everyone cooked roast dinners? I think it was colder overnight on those days too. In retrospect should have left it at 10, not 14, but was worried after the very cold snap previously.

Energy costs are pretty bemusing at the moment though since I am reading that the wholesale cost of gas in Europe is now lower than before the war in Ukraine started. Doesn’t seem to have had any effect on my 100% renewable energy costs though…

But yes, if you turned your boiler off it is harder to explain.

Plus it turns out ours went up because the people who were feeding our cat used our oven since theirs was broken.

I take it those are Smart Meter readings?

How is your water heated? Immersion Heater?

Did you actually turn the boiler off?

samstownsunset · 29/12/2022 18:46

Thank you
Yes smart meter readings and boiler switched off. These are screen shots from the app on my phone.

Hot water is from the boiler too. I'm a bit miffed as we weren't here at all so I was expecting it to be really low but it's just the same as every other day.

Doesn't make sense.

Our usage clearly fluctuates with how we use it.

ivykaty44 · 29/12/2022 21:23

who is your energy supplier?

can you contact them and enquire if you have a faulty meter?

if you were not there and the boiler is turned off then where or how is the gas being used?

greenacrylicpaint · 29/12/2022 21:28

standing charge plus boiler frost protection? how old are fridge/freezer?

any weird switch somewhere? we had one that went to the immersion heater in the loft which was no longer in use...

samstownsunset · 29/12/2022 22:09

It's with ovo, I haven't called them yet as my readings take a few days to appear on my app, only got them today although all the other readings seem about right for when we're home.
It's just these two days, very strange.

Fridge freezer is 2 years old and these readings don't include the standing charge, usage only!

There are no tanks in the loft and boiler was definitely off as I had to put it back on when I got home

Do you get an hourly view of the day ? That might help to pinpoint it.
if you had heating on before you went out might explain it
