I can see electric ones .. but does anyone know of a monitor that can advise of usage of both ? I am not good at doing readings so if such a thing existed .. would be big help.( we live rurally and dont get them fitted routinely ) thanks

Smart meters do both gas and electricity?

ouch44 · 11/12/2022 23:55

I tried to find something similar. I have an owl electric meter which I've had forever. I don't want a smart meter.

Have read that people do fit their own smart meters but I think you'd want a gas qualified person fitting it. Sticking with crouching in the gas cupboard for now!

PlantDoctor · 12/12/2022 04:49

Yes, a smart meter. It's dangerous for non-qualified people to fiddle with their gas supply, which is probably why you cannot find a commercially available monitor.

What do you mean that you’re not good at doing readings? Are your meters awkward to get to?

ApolloandDaphne · 12/12/2022 05:03

My smart meter shows both. I'm not sure why people hate them so much. It just shows me my energy usage and nothing else.

You won't find a similar plug in meter for gas, because it would need to be installed to measure the flow rate of gas, which is specialist work.

A smart meter will do what you want, give real time consumption readings.

You can get some usage data for your heating/hot water use with a Hive system or similar but it's probably not as detailed.

I'm with British Gas dual fuel and my smart meter does both gas and electric. Very useful.

You just need to ask your supplier to fit a smart meter, they all do it for free (at the point of use, the cost is paid for by the standing charge whether you have one or not).

I'm surprised they haven't already offered. Some have been rather enthusiastic about this over the past few years, making a nuisance of themselves until you give in and let them fit one.

Haven't got a smart meter, but I find it easy to take meter readings and know roughly what we use each month. Sadly I had a look at the gas this morning, so far in December we've used the same as the whole month in November - I've turned heating down!
