What smart meter will show me how much each appliance is costing me?

I might be daft for asking, but I keep seeing that people know exactly how much something is costing them (shower, a clothes wash) - I have a smart meter that OVO installed in the meter cupboard but it just sends an automatic reading to them, it doesn’t show me anything fancy!

I want to know what cost me £6 in electric yesterday 😩😮‍💨

It is a process of elimination…

I know the ‘background’ cost based on days when we are out of the house

I know from days when we do lots of laundry how much extra it goes up by, so can guesstimate how much a wash costs
Same with dishwasher…

I don't think there are any smart meters that do, but there are separate plug in devices. You can work it out with a smart meter by noting the KWH usage or pence, then switch the appliance on e.g. the oven, then see how much it goes up!

Ah I see - mine is not user friendly at all. Very clunky and reads like an old calculator!

For daily things, I've had to do a process of elimination as to what costs what, etc.
EDF have an Energy Hub that I log into & it gives a breakdown for the month usage as a pie chart .
It tells me how much electricity goes on fridge/freezers, other background stuff like house alarm, WiFi, Ring doorbell. It also tells me how much on lights & home entertainment, washing, etc.

That sounds great @MenopauseSucks - I wish OVO had the same. I suspect it’s the tumble dryer but I want to be sure before I make myself 10x harder!

I have an app called Hugo which provides a half hourly breakdown of both my gas and electricity usage, it runs a day behind, but if I know I put the washing machine on at 10am and had a shower at 6pm I can see the difference it makes.

I use it because although we have a smart metre the display thing wasn’t in the house when we moved in.

NewBootsAndRanty · 03/10/2022 22:42

If you look on your ovo online account (website or app), does it not have a bit that lets you see a monthly/weekly/daily/hourly/half hourly breakdown of your usage (usually up to yesterday) and historic usage?

JanglyBeads · 03/10/2022 22:43

It'll be the tumble drier, they're one of the biggest using devices.

OliverBabish · 04/10/2022 07:57

@NewBootsAndRanty i can see daily but nothing more than that at the moment - it said half an hour readings were unavailable when I tried yesterday. It’s just shocked me as Sunday’s usage was 12kWH but cost £6! Same usage before was around £2.

I had a smart meter fitted a few months ago and it came with a little handset, a bit like an old mobile phone, which shows the running costs.
