Metre readings and smart metre

We have a smart metre at home, so know our daily use.
my husband says we don’t need to input our metre readings at all because of this. We obviously still pay a projected direct debit, which seems high- we’ve been really cutting back!

Do you still provide metre readings with a smart metre?

I depends whether your meter is reporting correctly.

Ordinarily, no, you should not have to supply readings yourself, but if for some reason the smart meter can not report then you will receive estimated bills until this is corrected. It can be caused by something as simple as people piling the meter cupboard full of household detritus and blocking the wifi signal to the meter.

Check your bills if they are using smart meter readings then your smart meter is working and no need to provide them. If your bills show estimated readings then yes provide readings. Some of the original smart meters lose their smart functionality if you change supplier.

Our bills clearly indicate that they are calculated from smart meter readings, and we can see on the app the data that's collected. Log in to your account and look at the bills - we've not submitted a reading since it's been installed. That's the whole point of installing it from the energy company's point of view - they don't have to rely on consumers or pay people to check them.

Ok thanks. I’ll look into this. We have switched companies a few times and never had anyone come to change or programme the smart readers!

They wouldn't need to come out its all done remotely but like I say the older versions can't be switched from one provider to another. Just check the bills and you will have your answer.
