Energy monitor plug recommendations

I’d like to understand more about the cost of running appliances, especially the washing machine (just got a new one), dehumidifier, tumble dryer, fridge etc (fridge/freezer are old so trying to work out whether replacing them is a good investment).

Can anyone recommend one they have? I want it to be able to tell me how much electricity has been used since plugging it in - so I can work out the cost of different cycles on the washing machine/daily cost of the fridge.

I bought a Tapo smart energy monitor plug but it is useless for what I need.

I was just about to recommend my Tapo one… I’ve used a Kasa one for a while but I like the Tapo graphs etc.

That was on the washing machine using different cycles to see which was best!

What exactly are you looking for?

I have one of these, very happy with it.

@AnotherDelphinium my fridge has been plugged in with the Tapo plug for about 5 days - but I have no idea from the app how much it is actually costing me to run (pic attached).

I wanted it to tell me how much has been used over a day/hour etc so I can convert that into a running cost. I wanted to plug my washing machine into it and have it tell me how much energy a particular cycle uses.

I can’t see that it does that - we use Tapo plugs anyway so I’ll probably keep it as a smart plug, but I can’t see how the energy monitor part can help me manage my usage.

Ok, so you’re tapping on power rather than usage.

If you click about where I’ve done a red circle it will take you to the same bar graph, and then you can click on each day for a total amount of kWh.

What is your current electricity tariff? Mine is 40.13p/kWh, so I know the wash the other day was about 30p.

Does that help? If you want something like your smart meter but that you can plug different things into to tell you exactly, I’ve never been able to find that!

Energenie power meter plug from Screwfix. Circa £16

Thanks @AnotherDelphinium Here are my charts - that seems too low for a large 9 year old fridge? Google suggests a modern one might use 350-400 kWh a year, so I’d expect mine to use more than that.

I’ll plug it into something more powerful and see what happens.

Thanks @NSA2103 that one gets better reviews than the ones on Amazon
