Bets on what our Govt will do to combat inflation

I'm no economist and don't know too much about history but I'm super worried about hyperinflation.

I know Germany suffered it pre WW2 and got round it by setting up a Republic and a new currency I think?!

Then there was the Dawes Plan, but don't know much about that?

Are we going to have a new currency, the 'Brexitling' ?! 🤔😂

HeddaGarbled · 22/08/2022 19:55

Get jolly cross every time poor people ask for a pay rise.

Justjoinedforthis · 22/08/2022 19:55

Maybe get The KLF to burn another million quid?

aletterfromseneca · 22/08/2022 19:56

Nothing

Endofanera22 · 22/08/2022 20:04

I mean they must do something the whole country is going to fall on it's arse in the new year

Bugger all - many MP's have directorships, or chums who do, in companies which are doing exceptionally well at the moment - why would they want to kill the goose which lays the golden egg? And, since Liz Truss is trying to out-Thatcher Thatcher prepare for a rough ride, unless you happen to be one of the elite. The proles can sink or swim will, I guess, be the philosophy

Endofanera22 · 22/08/2022 20:22

But I don't see why setting us back 40 years will do the country/elite/rich any favours?

People are going to die through starvation, cold, disease from both. Theft will go through the roof, as will drug use and pushing...the rich will be affected, eventually, not immediately like those on less than minimum wages, but they will. Their millions will be worthless with hyperinflation.

Probably invoke more sanctions.

Charge for missed gp appointments

In short squeeze more from the majority and leave their mates all ok.

limitededitionbarbie · 22/08/2022 20:37

If energy prices continue to rise we will see an increase in theft of gas and electric.

Qualified engineers will offer this as a service on the side. To re route the gas mains or the elec

Do you know anyone? Asking for a friend...

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 22/08/2022 20:43

Pay rise for MPs and lots of stern talks about how we all need to work harder, tighten our belts and just get through it.

Elections are in 2024 so they might do something towards the end of 2023 to try to buy some voters but only if it doesn't annoy their rich established voter base.

Grin seriously though people are going to do this. Crime is also going to escalate in fact I think it already has.

Endofanera22 · 22/08/2022 21:01

I'm really really worried 😟 I'm not yet loosing sleep but I certainly don't doubt there are people out there who are already loosing sleep.

What they can do has been limited, because interest rates are no longer under their control. (One of Gordon Brown's first actions as Chancellor, and a Good Thing, but it did reduce the governmental toolbox)

HelloMrBond · 22/08/2022 21:18

Germany’s post ww1 inflation was caused by the banks printing more money to pay the striking workers. Yet today we see crazy posts on this forum calling for national strikes, the mind boggles.
It’s basic stuff; rail workers strike to get more pay. In order to pay the increased wages, the rail companies put up prices. Workers can’t afford the new rail fairs so they go on strike to up their wages. Eventually when everyone’s wages have gone up, the rail workers find that their upped wages don’t go as far as they hoped, so they go on strike again…… before you know it a rail ticket will cost thousands and a loaf of bread hundreds.

What started all this? The governments plan to pay people to sit at home during a flu pandemic. We are now reaping the rewards. For those who want to strike, be careful what you wish for.

limitededitionbarbie · 22/08/2022 21:25

@Unforgettablefire yes I do. We have engineers who we know.

It will become a real need for people soon if they are already struggling and when and if you do it. Please make sure you ask someone qualified as it's very dangerous to use someone who doesn't know what they are doing. Gas explosions can take out streets and lives. It's not recommended but if you are determined to do it then use a qualified engineer.

It terrifies me to think people will be doing this and any old person will do it on the basis of I think I know what I am doing.

It will invalidate your house insurance etc etc.

I really hate to say it but with these prices I just can't see it going any other way.

My Nan fiddled it years ago with a negative from a pic. I think this is how they did it back in the day. My mum etc we're on orders never to let the gas or lecky man in. He came in one day by accident and removed the negative and she swore blind it must of been in there from the day they moved. He gave her the negative and it was me and her on the couch. Smile

limitededitionbarbie · 22/08/2022 21:26

I'm not at the point of needing to but I get that people are.

It's just a matter of time before we see an explosion in a domestic house due to a fiddled meter which isn't safe.

Fuck all, like they do with everything that doesn't affect them directly

Allmarbleslost · 22/08/2022 21:34

I think their plan is probably to go on holiday and wait for it all to blow over

ThelmaDinkley · 22/08/2022 21:36

No qualified tradesman will do it as they risk prosecution and being struck off their professional register. Although when people get desperate May all go out of the window ..

There’s been at least 4 house explosions this year that I can think of!

Sweet FA is my bet.
