I've just had an electric bill for £1000

How can that be? We have a small semi. I am already paying £197 a month. They reckon I previously owed them £940. I don't think I did but there you go. Is there any way I can query this?

Did you change supplier because the previous went bust? Our new supplier didn’t bill us for 3 months so we’ve increased our direct debit to pay back the 3 months unpaid over a 12 month period

No I haven't changed supplier and this £900 wasn't evident on my last statement. I've just tried calling but the usual crappy "we experiencing high levels of calls blah blah blah".

They say I have an existing balance of 523.59 plus this statement electricity charges 516.87 from March to June.

An existing balance sounds like a credit from which your electricity charges are drawn?

That’s a lot. Do you have night storage heaters. Do you use them in the winter. If not you need to come off economy 7.

Did it say your existing balance is £523.59 or was it -£523.59? Is this £1000 bill a figure that you arrived at or was it clear on the bill that is what they want from you?

The 516 is your quarterly bill of 172pm and you're more than covering that with your monthly DD. Although that's going to be a lot more in the winter. Do you have an outstanding amount of 523 owing that has been building up? I doubt it suddenly came out of the blue. Normally they would have requested an increase in your DD to cover that. Are you sure that 523 is not credit?

What did your last quarterly bill show? It should have shown your outstanding balance on that.

That's the thing. I don't remember this debt building up. I'm going to try to get online to see what's going on. Fuckers they are.
