Gas/electric account in credit

How much credit balance on your gas/electric account is an acceptable level? Paid by direct debit, obviously not using as much gas in the summer for heating, but after paying this months bill, I'm still nearly £500 in credit. I feel like asking for a repayment of some of it.

I thought that they automatically credited it back to you when it got to a certain level 🤔 Why don’t you ask them ?

I'm 1000 in credit. Because I ended up in arrears around 4 years ago I've been overpaying since clearing it.. I did plan on getting it back but I decided not to. I'd like to be able to afford heating this winter so it will help massively.

We are £400 in credit...by October we will be £600 plus the £400 from the government. It will be used when the heating goes on again and the prices hike.

Will you be able to pay top up in winter? This credit will balance the extra in winter so unless you need it or can comfortably pay extra just ask to drop the DD a bit.

but I’ve read my meter each week and then calculated how much I use and doubled it for this years direct debit - so it’s all going to be used in the winter 🥶

I was 1000 in credit but then put my meter reading in and it came down, make sure you regularly put them in

I'm £400 in credit and leaving it there. I want that cushion next winter. I'm fixed until next June so I hope to build up more credit by then.

£300 in credit and it’ll go up the next few months too. Then I’ll have to spend it during winter.

£200 in credit - it was a lot more but I made the mistake of reading my meter yesterday and the bill was breath taking. They've also shoved my direct debit up £110 a month - more than doubled :(

We should be able to cope though may have to cut back on a few less necessary things but its going to be carnage for some people :(

I am £500 in credit as they're charging £350 but at the mo we are only using about £170 per month. I am thinking of it as a savings plan for winter!

I'm about £450 in credit at the moment, but I'm an oldstyle Ovo customer and I get 5% interest on my credit balance, so I'm quite happy to let it build up and sit there as a buffer before the winter.

Around £1,000 all will be gone over winter but my payments won't change.

Was a deliberate decision because I want a good Christmas!

EDF send it back if you're over £100 in credit at your annual review. I'd rather they kept it until I ask for it (I doubt I'd bother as I'd let it rack up these days).

£600 and going up by about £200 a month currently. I can afford it at the moment and I'd rather not have to worry about the heating once it starts to cool down.

I pay by variable DD, so none, but I certainly wouldn't want more in credit than a one-month payment. Unless you're incompetent with money, there's no reason for the gas/electricity company to store your money instead of it being in your bank account, in advance of future payments. Definitely ask for it back - 500 is a very large credit.

I'd be worried about the gas and elec company going busy if I had that sort of credit. Yes we're protected, we'd get it back eventually, but who needs the faff? And it might take ages to get back, all whilst energy bills are mounting up with no access to that credit. I agree with @Precipice . The extra is better saved in my savings account where I control it and can access it immediately. And why should the energy company be earning interest on my money? I'm not in the business of providing loans to multinational companies!
