I don’t have any newspapers.

Any other ideas please? Or prepared to buy the compostable bags but can’t really afford (or justify them) if cheap.

Aldi bags are really cheap

FelicityLemon · 20/01/2019 20:02

I do composting so I use any paper bag I happen to get (even the occasional fast food take out bag) otherwise I get the compostable ones from Poundland, 20 for a pound for when I don't have an paper ones.

greenelephantscarf · 20/01/2019 20:04

we collect flour and sugar bags for that. and take a newspaper when out and about

Wilko bags are cheap.

Processedpea · 20/01/2019 20:05

Just wash it out after use ,?

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 20/01/2019 20:06

You can get bundles of them for free from our bin men and the local recycling centre- does your council have anything similar?

I’m in NI though- I don’t know how it works for other areas.

ThatsitIquit · 20/01/2019 21:20

Thankyou for suggestions - much appreciated. I will investigate these ideas further, however I do know that my council don’t offer them which is disappointing.

The previous home-owner left us a non-standard 15L sized one so I do need to think outside the box....literally.

What do you empty your compost bin into? I line my with a bit of kitchen roll which goes into our compost pile along with the contents - makes cleaning it easier or sometimes not even necessary.

LIZS · 20/01/2019 21:25

Where do you shop? Morrisons use paper bags for fruit and veg now which would roughly fit.

PonyoPonyo · 20/01/2019 21:28

Amazon brown paper packaging, torn up primark bags, empty flour packets are some of the things I use

TheSpottedZebra · 20/01/2019 21:28

Pick up a free newspaper from a supermarket?
ask for some on free cycle ?

mrsoutnumbered · 21/01/2019 14:05

I find wilko the cheapest. Tried the aldi ones and found them too thin and the Poundland ones aren't big enough to fit a standard caddy.

I also loathe to buy bags but anything else leaves the bin grotty and I dont want to wash a manky bin every week!

StrawberryTraveller · 25/01/2019 07:40

I don't use anything in our compost bin indoors. Just add the fruit nd veg peeling etc, then every other day empty onto our compost bin in garden. You could do the same and just empty into outdoor food waste bin if you use instead.

They just wash the small bin with hot soapy water and re use.

I use a large yogurt pot with lid and handle, Lidl or Morrison sell yougurt in this size.

I keep it on the kitchen counter & the green bin is 5 steps from the back door.

I swill it out between emptying and refilling and replace every 6 months for a new pot and pop the old pot in the recycling
