Usually a balance transfer is credit card to credit card but if you have been offered a money transfer you can pay it into a bank account.
You may not be able to transfer into Halifax but if you would really benefit then you could set up another current account at a different bank- think I've got 4 current accounts across 2 banks- you might even get a welcome bonus and could then transfer the money to your Halifax current account
