Does anyone want to join me in a 'sealed savings' thread?

Inspired by a long running thread on MSE.

Basically all you need is a moneybox/Terrimundi/sealed tin/ something you have made. You put your loose change in it throughout the year and then open it on the last day of November 2014. It can then be used for Christmas Spends or on whatever you like.

You can keep a tally or have a surprise at the end.

Go on then. I'll start tomorrow. I'm always saying I'll do it so may as well be now!

You can get the sealed tins (the one you open with a tin opener from the £ shop).

We did this a bout two years ago, saved £2 coins in a terramundi jar, got just over £500 in 18 months

We are doing it again and I also save 20p pieces in a smarties tube, that mounts up as well

Well we are saving to go to Disneyland Paris in Summer 2015 so hoping to have enough by next November.

Have a ceramic pot that I got for my birthday so I am using that.

Yes I do! Despite budgeting for and spreading out the cost of Christmas this year e.g. Started buying early! I'm still anticipating some spends over November and December which will hit finances as they inevitably do every year, leaving me desperately counting down the days until the council tax break in feb/march! I had thought I'd start in January but no harm in starting now, meaning a years worth of pennies by next Nov 1st!

I have 2 tins on the go atm - one for £2 coins and one for any coins/notes we find on the floor. I am always finding pennies here & there and am curious to see how much I amass from the floor in one year!

We did have a £2 tin before, which was going for about 3 months & got about £180, so it was a good boost to our house-moving fund.

I started 3 in March - one for coppers, one for 5p's and one for £2 coins. I filled the coppers one quite quickly and got about £7 out of that and now have a second on the go. The £2 had to be opened early to pay towards dd1's uni accommodation deposit, that had £100 in it so not bad for a couple of months' saving. The third one is about 2/3 full atm.
I shall get another tin and start again saving £2 coins after Christmas and see if I can get it to last a whole year!!

We have various ones in our house.
Demi John in front room for 5ps is half full and approx £200, going to put 20ps in it next time.

I have a secret one for £1 coins for wedding fund

All coppers, 10s and 20s go in a drawer and we used to change them for spending money on holidays once a year or so, usually £100ish.

Haven't changed them this year yet looking forward to seeing how much is in there!

I've got a terramundi which I've been saving in since February this year. I put £2 coins and 50p pieces in whenever I get any in my change - I don't even miss them and it's filling up quite nicely. I'm saving to take DS abroad next summer and I originally started it to save up our spending money but at the rate it's filling up it might pay for a chunk of the actual holiday cost too .

I did this for £2 coins when I was pregnant with the idea that it would pay for treats for me while not earning - ended up with £350 which was a big surprise and came in handy (sadly) towards a new boiler, although I did manage a few treats first! Would love to do it again. I will superglue the lid on an enormous pickling vinegar jar and cut a slot in the lid somehow. Too cheap to buy something to smash... Might even decorate it!

I'm up for this, do you count as you go along or go blind?

We have been doing the £2 in a jar thing... it is in a secret place so DH cant raid it! Started on Jan 1 and have yet to peep and count up...

MrsPink that savings scheme is fab, it just goes to show how savings can really build up. However, it's easy at the start when you'd only be putting in a few pounds a week but not so achievable towards the end when it's up to £30, £40 or even £50 per week. In the last month you'd have to put in over £200! I'd probably have to stop at around week 26 .

They have that saving thing on MSE too :) I looked into it but I can't work out where I'll get the £200-ish from in the last month for saving DP is interested in it though even though he's a student so goodness knows where he will find it!

I suppose you could save using that system up to the point where it's achievable for you, then keep putting the same amount in. So say if you can afford to put £25 per week aside, when you get to week 26 and above, just put £25 per week away.

I think I might start this on 1st Jan and get as far as I can, then use what I save for a holiday in 2015. I'm rubbish at saving as I tend to dip into it but doing something like this would be more of an incentive as you can see how it'll build up.

That sounds like a plan, I may try that and see how much I can put aside!

I must admit that I tend to be okay at saving, until something big comes along and destroys my savings because I don't earn very much to start with. Like my tooth needing a root canal took out £800 recently and the last £600 will go on my car insurance at Christmas so I'm starting from scratch in the new year! Last time it was moving to Brighton that wiped my savings and I was so chuffed with them finally starting to recover and start growing at a steady rate!

You can get the most money out of a terrimundi with a knife. sigh

I think the idea is that at first you dont notice the extra £ or 2, and once you have "survived" the first few weeks it is easier to build up... will give it a go and see how far we get!

I do this, I put a tenner in every month as soon as I get paid then top it up with 1 or 2 pound coins the rest of the month
