where to get the cheapest groceries?

how about a mumsnet comparison site to compare the prices and post deals in the supermarkets, save everryone trailing around? eg where is the cheapest place to buy....?

wheatbisks. aldi 3.2p each, everyday essentials 48 pack

kidney beans. tesco/asda everyday value/smart price. 21p (cheaper than morrisons)

cucumbers. asda 50p (or double the size/twice the price at an independent) (they replace the ham in the childen's sandwiches)

I always find asda the cheapest, and they deliver from £2, the nearest one from me is about 15 miles away, so I always get mine delivered.

I love it that even Aldi are doing a "basics" range now!

Just go to Aldi.

Its cheaper than normal branded items but just as good quality. Much better than any supermarket 'value' or own brand.

You'll also save yourself a fortune in petrol.

I've started going to Lidl and the reduced section of the Coop. Tonight I got a big pork shoulder joint for £1.99, Beef strips for £1,20 and yesterday 4 packs of haddock for £3. I just freeze it and base our meals around what I can get cheap.

Aldi's and Lidl are your best bet

Don't forget independent shops like your butchers and markets.

Admittedly, it is a faff if you are short of time, but it can save money and I go when I can. I can get a cauliflower at my local market for 50p as opposed to £1 in the supermarket.

Second the locl market for cheaper fresh stuff, especially on a Saturday about 3.30 pm. I get carriers full of stuff for 50p ...means having to do a big cook up or batch freeze but well worth it.!

Do you have a B&M bargains locally or any of the similar discount shops? You can quite often find sauces / cereal / condiments / store cupboard ingredients cheaper than even Aldi. Our local Aldi is on a retail park with a B&M Bargains across the road, I go in there first to see what they have (its never really the same, it depends what they can get hold of I think) and buy there first.

Fruit and veg is much cheaper than any supermarket at the local market, but I've found that cheese and cooked meats are more expensive. The butchers is more expensive than say Aldi, but the quality (and locality) of the meat is better.

I have discovered that Iceland are fantastic, see my post on the keeping food costs low in Summer thread, although it applies to Winter too. Also love Lidl, good for washing tablets, olives, yoghurt (equivalent of Muller light costs 31p), cooked meats, biscuits to name but a few things.
