Are out of date tests reliable?

Just done a covid test that was 6 months out of date. It came straight up with the positive result. Could it be wrong though being 6 months out of date? I've been feeling very unwell and remembered I had the old tests in my cupboard and thought I'd do it. I can try to get a new indate test to check. Thankyou.

I have found them to be reliable and also for water to be used in place of the liquid supplied which seems to dry up quickly.

Did it twice. They are 6 months out of date.

They are dated for a reason I wouldn't trust the result

combinationpadlock · 08/07/2024 20:27

They are fine, the date just tells you it might have dried out. They will be giving true results

The reagents in the liquid can degrade but that's more likely to give a false negative than a false positive.

@FuzzyStripes How does the water work?

LuckysDadsHat · 09/07/2024 21:52

I have just tested this myself. Tested on a brand new test and got a positive this morning. I'm feeling ill so it makes sense. I have a test 18 months out of date and tried it tonight and that ones negative.

They do say the proteins in the test break down and it won't react when the reagent and sample are placed on it.

I would say if you got a positive test you are positive as all the stuff I have read say it will give you a false negative (as in my case).

You're feeling unwell so I'd say it's correct.

My sister works in a related field and says if you get the control test line appearing then the results will be reliable. So if you have some out of date tests then by all means try them.

KatiesMumWoof · 17/07/2024 20:09

can anyone please help me with these tests?

do you think positive or negative?

they both had a lot of dye going up the indicator strip but this is how they've 'settled'

the solution is in date, but the 'readers' expired in January. I can get some new tests tomorrow,
