Any coeliacs around? Vaccine question

DD was diagnosed over the summer and we've just received a letter inviting her to book a covid vaccine due to higher risk.
She's never actually had covid (even when we both did!) Or had a vaccine so we don't know whether she should have it or not.

It’s advisable. Just because she’s never had it, doesn’t mean she won’t get it now. Has she had other childhood immunisations? This is just the same, something to give your child to protect them from serious illness.

In this study people with coeliac disease were at higher risk of hospitalisation compared with people without the condition but reassuringly, the researchers found the risk of hospitalisation was decreased in patients with coeliac disease who had been vaccinated, demonstrating the benefit of the COVID-19 vaccines.

Yes she has had all vaccines so far, I was unsure of covid because of the reports about periods being affected but the coeliac is a recent development
Thanks for the link 🤗

Coeliac disease can affect your spleen and make you immunocompromised. It doesn’t happen to everyone who has coeliac, but they don’t know who’s affected and who’s not, so they just vaccinate everyone who has coeliac.

DogInATent · 18/10/2023 19:36

Yes. Had my invite come through last week. Coeliacs were always part of the least-risk at-risk group and were called for vaccine just before the general population.

Thanks everyone, I've booked her an appointment

If it reassures you at all both my DD and I both coeliacs never had any problems with periods and the vaccines. Sadly we’re both down currently as she brought covid home from Uni, DD is doing fine but I ended up on oral steroids with 24 hours, without the vaccine I would definitely be in hospital as I’m CEV
