Both Parents Hospitalised Not Vaccinated

Hi people,

Hoping someone can help.
My parents are both in hospital at the moment with pneumonia. They had coughs for a long time and I convinced them to go to the doctor. The doctor sent them both straight to hospital. They are both mid seventies but are usually very fit and healthy, especially my mum.
The problem is, I'm convinced it happened because they have been brainwashed to be anti vax because of my older brother who still lives at home with them.
They both used to get flu jabs, but since lockdown they've all become anti vax and I know they only got the first Covid jab and they stopped getting flu jabs too.
They told me that my brother was ill at the same time and he tested positive for Covid when he went to the doctor.

I've said to them that they probably had it also and if they'd been vaccinated they might not have been to ill. I said they should get the vaccine, but they deny it's anything to do with it.
I asked the nurse at the hospital and she said she couldn't be sure it was Covid that caused it.

I'm scared this will happen again and I don't know how to convince them take more care.
What would you do?
Thanks

It is for vulnerable groups, babies and over 65s, and shingles for over 70s.

The spring one is only for over 75s I think. And possibly immunosuppressed. The rest of the vulnerable groups have to take their chances with a winter booster for a non seasonal virus.

Where did the idea that having 1 or 2 vaccines. A couple of years ago mean you were vaccinated come from? That’s a bit like only giving the 8 week and maybe the 12 week jabs and wondering why your 1 year old has whooping cough. Or wondering why the flu vaccine I had 2 years ago hasn’t stopped me getting flu this year.

@RafaistheKingofClay my reply was in response to the pneumonia vaccine query.

Shopper727 · 28/05/2023 10:40

The pneumococcal vaccine is for over 65 and you would bet it more often (5-10 years if you have a particular under lying health condition that makes you eligible) however it doesn’t stop you getting pneumonia it should lessen how severe the symptoms are.

Getting covid jag wouldn’t stop you getting pneumonia, my mum had them all and still got pneumonia- she’d also had the pneumococcal vaccine but she wasn’t as unwell as the previous time she had it.

What has not having a covis vaccine and getting pneumonia got to do with each other?

Am I the only confused one?

Pneumonia is one of the biggest complications arising from Covid. That’s what the issue was back in the days of full pandemic - people were overwhelming hospitals with Covid pneumonia.

Vaccinations make a huge dent in the numbers in those who go to develop pneumonia specifically from Covid. Same for the flu jab.

Oh oh oh... People who are vaccinated AND boosted have been dying all over the world from Covid. There is no difference. They've also had one jab as you said, so they're not unvaccinated.
People get ill... vaccinated and unvaccinated alike. That is all there is to it. I hope they get well soon.

You are wrong that there is no difference in outcome between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated.

BonnieLisbon · 28/05/2023 11:10

If you're not eligible for the pneumonia vax for free on the nhs you can pay for it. It's not as cheap as the flu one but worth it I think

Honestly, there is no point trying to reason with vaccine deniers.
