Getting really frustrated with no smell or taste

midnightblue12 · 03/04/2023 18:37

Please can someone reassure me. Roughly when can I expect it back?
I'm feeling fully recovered although still positive. Just NO smell or taste.
I'm a massive comfort eater and I'm finding this SO hard 😢

I know many will tell me "it's been a year" etc.
But on average how long should this last?

My smell came back after about 10 days my taste took about a month.

whoruntheworldgirls · 03/04/2023 18:53

Recently had a cold and it's taken just over 2 weeks to get my taste back (always lose my taste and smell with a cold ☹️) I know how you feel, super frustrating.
On the plus side for me i lost weight as wasn't snacking/boredom eating/eating sweets/drinking wine. Was eating the bare minimum to stop the hunger.

midnightblue12 · 03/04/2023 19:18

@whoruntheworldgirls yes I normally loose it too with colds but somehow get it back when I blow my nose but it's like my sense have completely left the building this time!!
I can't imagine no taste for a month 😢 or longer!
I'm such a comfort eater. I wish it would support my diet but I'm finding myself mindlessly eating crap now to satisfy a craving but it's not happening 🙈

Mine was gone for about 3 weeks after I felt well enough to eat again but after about 2 weeks I could just about taste really salty things. I ate a lot of bacon!

I know a lot of other people who've said really salty/sweet stuff can just about be tasted when they've had covid. Worth a try maybe?

Mugsandplates · 04/04/2023 18:39

Yes pretty much… that was back in 2020, dh and ds were the same but it did come back. I feel your pain, it was horrible :(

morbidcuriosity · 05/04/2023 23:53

I was just over a week, then it started to come back.. I absoutely hated it, only bonus was i didnt eat junk food and i could drink cheap wine!

YungDumbThrills · 06/04/2023 00:11

6 months with neither, then It turned into Parosmia which has been two years now. Slowly getting better but still can't stomach taste or smell of garlic, onion or any form of berry.

I’m afraid it’s different for everyone. I’m on my third bout of covid and mine has gone again.
First time I lost it for 5 months and every time I get a cold it goes again for two or three weeks.
It is very frustrating and you don’t realise how the enjoyment of life changes without your taste and smell. It didn’t stop me eating because I was forever chasing the flavour of food.
I fully sympathise with you OP.

midnightblue12 · 08/04/2023 15:48

I'm still without smell, can taste a little, very raondomly :( I seem to taste salty things a little more but the taste comes back for about 2 seconds and the. Nothing for 13 hours.
My throat and nose are still very congested! I was hoping I'd be feel better by mow :(

Sorry to hear others have gone on along time too! It really is awful isn't it. Especially if you're anything like me and would normally be eating right now to get some comfort whilst being unwell!

Mine came back (from absolutely no taste/smell at all) after around 2 weeks. However some things don't taste right 6 months later. Be warned your taste/smell can return but not everything may taste as before. Personally I'd rather taste nothing at all than have foods that taste bad or off.

WilsonMilson · 16/04/2023 16:08

Mine was about 3 weeks. Had covid over New Year. Was the worst part of covid for me, along with painfully dry sinuses. Otherwise it was milder than many colds I’ve had. Came back completely at about 3 weeks. Ate highly spiced food and interestingly textured foods to try to get at least some pleasure from eating. Was very depressing and anxiety provoking though, it was no fun.

I did smell training which I think absolutely helped. Utilised my herb and spice jars, citrus fruit, candles, perfumes, menthol. As many as I could. Did it a few times a day.

since March 2020

midnightblue12 · 16/04/2023 19:33

@Nimbostratus100 oh dear that's awful for you!

So my taste and smell have resumed to normal now. It was about 10 days in total. I was so unbelievably congested and after getting a little smell and taste back it completely went again which was so disheartening! I got some sudafred nose spray for blocked nose which cleared my sinuses up completely and a couple days later the taste and smell came back.
Most things are back to normal tbh, I felt so unlucky and stressed at the time but I guess I was very lucky to not have real long term effects!

I agree, this was the worst part of Covid for me!
