How long is it taking to get over COVID now?

Went back to work yesterday after having been off for 3 weeks with COVID (first time). Obviously a lot better than I was but still feeling hot a lot (although do not seem to have a temperature), still feeling achy, still feel and sound like I have a heavy cold and definitely have brain fog. How long until I can expect to feel better or is it a case of how long is a piece of string?

May well be the latter - how long is a piece of string! I had Covid a couple of weeks ago and am absolutely fine now, even my taste/smell is well on the way to being fully back. I was ill for one week, and yes, can identify with the brain fog, that was quite bad! However I bounced back quickly (surprisingly!). Different strokes for different folks. :)

Thesummeriwas16 · 14/10/2022 22:35

That's encouraging @CrunchyCarrot!! One thing is I haven't lost my sense of taste or smell so I suppose I should be grateful for that! 😀

I first had it in Nov 2021 and ten full days before I started to turn a corner. I was bed bound with it.

Second time was this June. I was feeling really crappy but fine enough to go to work. Was testing before every shift on an LFD because we had too. All negative. Coincidentally I was taking part in a survey and did a PCR test which came back positive. Now I had been feeling bad for 2-3 week at this point. Started to feel better shortly after.

So two times but two completely diffident outcomes

Yes, lateral flow tests really aren't that great are they. I definitely had COVID for at least a week before it showed up as positive.

First time in March, was well enough to work after 9 days but still not completely better. Got it again in August, couple of days of bad cold then back to what I now consider normal with the long Covid( though did have more bad than good days in the week or two after).

I had symptoms last Wednesday was sick all night. Positive the next day and slept through entire day.
Had a slight cough and very mild flu signs. Tested negative 2 days ago and feel back to normal. To be fair I've had 6 jabs take vit. d supplements daily and a low dose of steroids. However my much younger neighbour had exactly same scenario as myself minus the sickness without any jabs or meds and is fine now.

Jenasaurus · 15/10/2022 00:24

I am feeling so much better overnight, I initially had a sore throat on Wednesday, tested negative (as there is covid in my household took the test) then yesterday, couldn't stop sneezing felt very tired, took another test, very strong positive, slept all day today and woke up feeling much better and hungry even just did another test and an incredibly weak positive, is it really possible I have shortened the virus to just one day, is it down to the 4 vaccines, as a fat, old diabetic I was so scared of this virus and I don't want to undermine anyone else who has suffered worse symptoms (including my DDs boyfriend household who was unwell for 10 days) but this may be good news for vaccine and diabetics, maybe they do work and at least I know my immune system is still working :)

Long Covid started with backache and pains all over, plus breathlessness with any strenuous exercise. It is getting better, the pains now only come if I completely overdo it and can do a fair bit of slow walking, but still get breathless on a brisk walk and running is out of the question.

My DH tested positive on Wednesday and he's feeling better today just a nasty cough. On day 1 to 2 he was the worst with fever, shaking, bunged up, aching. He's still testing positive, hoping it dosent come back on bad. Hugs to all.

AlternativelyWired · 16/10/2022 14:39

I'm on day 9 and feel like shit. I'm aching especially my back and abdomen, feel sick, headache, congested, breathless, mild cough, fever, eyes aches, teeth ache, chest aches, and so so tired. If I'm not in bed with a hot water bottle I'm on the sofa with a hot water bottle. No fever until yesterday. Same for ds. I was hoping to have him back to school tomorrow but there's no way.

How are you feeling now @AlternativelyWired? I've been back to work twice now and had to go off sick again due to aching and brain fog. Worried work are going to lose patience with me!

I'm sorry you are struggling. It will be 2 weeks tomorrow since I tested positive but I am far from getting back to normal. I ventured out for the first time today to the shop and felt dizzy, spaced out and very breathless. I struggled to pick my feet up and was exhausted when I got back. I have pains in my sternum and at the base of my lungs but the backache has eased. My appetite is rubbish and I'm still really tired. The congestion, and headaches have pretty much gone but still getting abdo pain, sore throat, aches, nausea, and sore eyes. It's such a joy!

Hi, sorry you are still so poorly. I am day 9 and still testing positive, very tired, nausea and no taste/smell. Are you still testing positive?

jtaeapa · 22/10/2022 09:44

You really shouldn’t be working IMO. I had it in August and it took me 8 weeks to get fully better. The more you rest, the better you get. And I’d had 3 jabs and also had covid the previous year as well (which took me about 3 weeks to get over).

CPL593H · 22/10/2022 09:49

3 weeks 1 day and it was only yesterday I started feeling substantially better, still very tired and breathless easily (although oxi sats fine, which is something) Taste and smell went day 4/5, starting to come back.

pistachioicecream · 22/10/2022 10:24

Came down with covid 4 weeks ago today. Only had 1 day of feeling bad enough to stay in bed but am still coughing constantly which is driving me (and everyone around me mad). By the end of each day am back to sounding croaky again and feeling like I have a head cold. It's so odd.

Mainlining cough sweets in an attempt to stay on top of the cough (doesn't really work) but they make me feel grim because of all the sugar.

So am not as bad as some of you posting here but I've still had enough and just want to feel normal again :-(

MichaelFabricantWig · 22/10/2022 11:25

I felt fine by day 4. A bit tired on exertion for another couple of weeks.

contrast with the flu/cold thing I have had for a month now and still feel shit, if I had a choice I’d have preferred Covid again.

AlternativelyWired · 22/10/2022 21:24

I feel much better today! Almost back to normal I'd say although I've been at home doing not a lot so I don't know if it's a fair assessment. Dd reckons I've been exaggerating how bad it was Angry

@AlternativelyWired That's what I thought but when you go into work it's another matter altogether so go careful.

Luckily I don't work as in paid employment, I'm a carer for my mum and I'll be taking it easy the next couple of weeks and getting the bus instead of walking everywhere. Going to the shops yesterday was exhausting. Today I have had horrendous back pain but I feel much better in myself.
