Covid Changed Sense of Taste?!

Hi!!
I'm so annoyed that I managed to go this long without getting Covid, but it happened!! I started feeling extremely unwell about 10 days ago. I felt fine when I went to bed but throughout the night I had a bad fever, fuzzy feeling in my head and general symptoms I assumed was a bad case of the flu.
I didn't have a persistent cough or any other symptoms that made me question whether it could be covid.
I started taking regular painkillers and increased my fluids and tried to rest as much as possible...which was nearly impossible being a single mum of 5 and not having that luxury of being able to stay in bed!!
Over the next 2-3 days/nights I wasn't getting any better. I've only ever had a bad case of the flu once before and my symptoms were exactly the same!
On day 4 I was talking to my mum on the phone and she asked me if I had done a Lateral Flow Test. It never even crossed my mind to do a test!! As far as I was concerned it was just bad flu like I've had before. Anyway, I did a test straight away and BOOM! INSTANT POSITIVE RESULT! Didn't make much of a difference with regards to how I felt or what medication I was taking.
I didn't notice a huge or even noticeable change to my sense of taste or smell while I was unwell. It wasn't until I was starting to feel a bit better that it became obvious.
A well known affect of covid is a change in smell and or taste but I never expected it to be quite so bad. My son had covid in October 2021 and he said he lost his sense of taste and smell while he had covid and for a very long time after but it eventually returned.
My experience is totally different!! My sense of smell wasn't really affected that much. It was like when you have a cold and your smell comes and goes every so often.
But TASTE!!! Wow that's been a massive change!!! I didn't have much of an appetite when I was really unwell but when my appetite started to come back I noticed at first that I couldn't taste much at all. Like a cold.
But , then I started to realise that certain foods were tasting completely different!! The only way I can describe it is eating something you normally like e.g. a slice of pizza, but it doesn't taste like a slice of pizza in any way shape or form!! It now has the flavour of petrol!!! Not that I know what petrol tastes like as I've never tried it lol but what I imagine it would taste like.
I expected this to be temporary and to start wearing off but it's not.
Has anyone else had this?? Did it eventually go back to normal?? Are you still experiencing this kind of bad and extreme change in taste? If so, how long has it been going on for??

After covid, certain cheeses tasted like petrol to me (I haven't tried them again to see if they still do), I've also gone off some food that I used to like (hummus being one). I've also, unfortunately, developed a massive sweet tooth!

I had Covid December last year with such severe gastro symptoms I was sent to a&e. First thing I noticed was the smell of Dettol which seemed "off". I threw it away but new bottle was the same. Then as my smell came back my taste didn't. I cannot drink fizzy drinks any more, all I can taste are chemicals. I would say it has only been recently I can taste most foods again, with long periods of food having no taste. The Dettol still smells off and Pepsi still tastes crap. It is frustrating but I had read it can take a long time for it to come back.
