Is there any light at the end of the tunnel

I know a family who are down with covid for the second time in a matter of a few short months. March was the last time. I had covid last week and it's no picnic.

Covid reminds me of a cold that has married a flu.

This can't possibly be ideal to have a flu type of illness every few months.

I'm someone who's not able to get sick. I don't tolerate sickness well and I don't have time to be sick. I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve to help myself. I remember in the winter of 2019 many people arou D me got cold after cold but I avoided them. I looked after myself so much to avoid colds.

But I wasn't able to avoid covid. I dread to think what this will be like every 3 or 4 months.

There has to be some sort of a let up surely. The world and its people needs a break from this.

Yes we need to build up our immunity to it, which is exactly what is happening now.

But that’s a fallacy though - you can get reinfected again and again. There is no building up of immunity, and there is no need immmunity either.

For me, seeing so many people come down with a flu type of illness right in the middle of summer - it's depressing and there's no end in sight. The fact there were infections a few months ago and there will probably be other infections in a few short months. My guess September we will see another new varient and more infections and sickness.

There's something not right. With a flu, you would only really get it once every few years. Colds are more often but flus once every few years.

Covid is like a flu type of illness with fever and body aches and other symptoms including loss of taste and smell and other sickness.

It's not ideal to have covid go around 2 or 3 times a year.

There's something not sitting right with me about all of this but I can't put my finger on it.

It sounds like you suffer from health anxiety OP, you need to speak to your GP. I’ve been there and it’s dark and obsessive … it ruins your day to day. Just be honest with them and they will be able to reassure you. Been there ♥️

I do t have health anxiety. I do t have covid anxiety either. I came to realise that we are all going to get covid.

I'm struggling with the idea of infections every few months and reinfections. March and July is such a short space of time. I think there will be more too.

It's not ideal to have flu type of illness go around 2 or 3 times a year. A flu type of sickness was only once every few years before covid.

There's something not sitting right with me about covid and the way this is all turning out to be.

I don't think you have health anxiety op. I have been pondering the same. I have finally succumbed and it isn't pleasant. It was almost as bad as flu but I last had flu 40 years ago!
I too can see this becoming a several time soon year occurance. This new variant seems so transmissible. In previous waves o ly one ot teofamily members seem to succumb but this time every family member seem to be catching it. Not just my family but friends too.

I agree with you OP and it's bloody depressing. I cannot see how it will all 'end' at the moment. You are quite right that in a normal summer you would not have every other person you know down with a flu-like illness and that's certainly what is happening where I live.

....there's also that grim feeling that if you go to certain events - you know, as part of enjoying life - you're almost certainly going to get exposed and I never, ever feel that way about flu or indeed any other illness. I don't give flu a second thought but covid does not feel the same.

I honestly don’t think this is part of some conspiracy - it’s a new virus.
Influenza has been around for thousands of years so we have built up significant immunity to it as a population. because it’s been around for so long it mutates but not as much as covid.

just look up why swine flu wasn’t as bad as expected

covid has been around for 2 years. A large percentage of the population haven’t had it, large parts of the world are unvaccinated so immunity remains low - which means that mutations will take place far easier

it will settle but only after a long time - at which point we will probably not be thinking about it as much

I think it is quite concerning, even if it is 'mild'. Even if there was no such thing as long Covid, there are a lot of people who don't get paid if they don't work, so being too unwell to work will have disastrous consequences for them.
I hope there's a lot of people still looking for a more lasting solution to this

I am concerned too, OP, about the longer-term consequence of repeat infection, my teens have had it twice and likely to get it again as they are around others with it all the time. I had it once but badly and really am worried, as it has affected me longer-term and the thought of going back to the beginning and starting again is worrying. The sheer amount of people off sick or unable to get up their stairs even if it's only for a few days is really impacting services as well.

I don't know what we can do though, I've had all available jabs!

I also know quite a few people who have not technically got Long Covid, but have felt tired or exhausted even when working for many months after Covid, and there are mental health/neurological consequences of Covid as well as the more obvious cough, stroke etc.

It would be lovely to live without even thinking about this, I was also really hoping this was the back of Covid but Covid seems to have other ideas, judging by the infection rates and inability to build immunity.

Before Covid, I was a one-day-a-year sick leave kind of person.
So far this year I've already had Covid twice, in January and now. I might get it again before the year is out. I had nine days out of work last time and this time is going to be at least 4, maybe more.
So my sick leave has gone from 1 day to say 13 days or perhaps as much as 17-20+ if I get it again before Xmas. That's a huge amount of productivity lost and cover needed, an increase maybe 1500-2000%. Both times so far I've been too sick to work; it's not like I could have worked even if I wanted to. That's not sustainable for any business.

I had it in March - knocked me out - got it again now it's more like a mild cold. I presume as I've built up some immunity

It’s not completely unexpected. Immunity to coronaviruses tends to be short lived. One of the questions they were looking at in 2020 was whether this one would be different. I think we’ve probably answered that question now.

coukd you stop beating about the bush & just say what you mean??

I was hoping we'd be in a better situation at this point (summer 2.5 years in) and I'm finding it quite depressing that we're not and for many of us the risk is much higher now because people aren't isolating with it and are going out & about for leisure as well as work, without a thought for others.

I accepted it would be two years of essentially 'shielding' (due to underlyings), but I was hoping (expecting really) that we'd be in a better place in the summer this year.

I’ve worked all the way through in the nhs and have had 2 days off since the start of the pandemic - that was waiting for kids PCR results to come back.

Yes I think everyone will get it

but hopefully a much milder version than the original due to the variant and being boosted

if everyone got it back in 2020 - well that would have been a disaster
