But taste has packed up and left.

I'm finding it strange enough to have lost both at times but sense of smell seems to come and go with no rhyme or reason, taste is just non existent though, even when I can smell. Is it common for sense of smell to come and go every few hours or so?

This will sound silly but I feel like I can taste things in my mouth but not in my nose. ?? Smell is there but not great.

My sister had covid back in March 2020 and permanently lost her sense of smell and taste. And she lives to cook and bake too 🥺. She has calcification up there and they are trying to retrain her senses but so far not working. Devastating. Hope yours comes back.

when did you have covid? I had it in December and my smell and taste went totally for a couple weeks and when it came back it was very up and down. One day fine, the next not. Also varied throughout the day. Even now some things don't smell right, some can't smell at all but taste is pretty much back to normal other than odd disturbances.

I get paranoid I wouldn't be able to smell if fresh produce like meat is off (paranoid as kept getting off chicken from a certain supermarket pre covid!). I get my kids to have a whiff and I look at their facial expressions. Maybe I'm mean.

my partner had covid and lost both senses totally, but only for 3 days and it came back fully straight away!

I’m about seven weeks in and it is the weirdest thing. Sometimes I have an awareness of taste, sweet/sour/spicy etc, sometimes I can smell things really clearly, sometimes not at all, and sometimes phantom smells. I was out for lunch with my friend and commented that someone was eating really strong fish - she thought I was nuts.

I almost gassed myself the other day when the ignition on the grill hadn’t clicked in. Per pp, I am paranoid about cooking. My DP is away for work quite a bit and I am eating only veggie food while he isn’t home.

I had it in the beginning of February and still not right. I can smell fairly well, and I feel like I can taste a bit, but it's like the connection between my nose and mouth has gone. It's difficult to explain, but you know how you can kind of smell what in your mouth, and that helps with the taste, that's the bit that's gone. I'm not sure if it'll ever come back!

I'm on day 9, and have zero sense of smell and can taste no flavour (can tell if something is sweet or salty from the feeling on my tongue). I'm starting to feel better, but still no smell sense. I can stick my nose in a pot of Vicks, smell TCP, the food bin, marmite, mustard - nothing! I don't even know if I smell - nice or horrible!

Has anyone else had this and how long did it take to come back / start coming back.

When I had covid just over a month ago, my sense of smell came back fairly quickly but my taste took a few weeks to properly come back. Like your sense of smell, it would come and go - it was often better at the start of the day, then by the end of the day I could barely taste anything. Thankfully it has come back properly now so hopefully yours will too!

I had it in Dec 2021 and it still comes and goes. I can smell either really strong smells or sweet. Coffee smells like burnt hair and garlic smells disgusting where I can't describe. I used to love garlic and now I just feel sick when I smell it in food. Taste, it's like I've had something so hot and burnt my tongue where I have this numb sensation. I can only taste salt, sour, sweet and spicy. It's so weird to explain where even my DH doesn't understand.
