Very sore throat but negative LFT

This is a sort of batting the options round to help me decide thread.

Woke in the night with a very sore throat (hurts to swallow) and ever so slightly stuffy nose. Took an LFT this morning, negative.

I’m retired, so no financial implications. However, the week’s plans include:

  • choir practice this evening
  • lunch with friends tomorrow
  • volunteer driving Wed and

Sorry, hit post too soon.

Volunteer driving Wed and Thur
Hairdresser Sat (rearranged from storm Eunice.
Church social Sat pm and church Sunday.

The church things and the volunteer driving involve mixing with elderly and vulnerable people. Also DH is due to lead a service on Sunday.

I’m inclined to forewarn the people in the various groups, and take daily tests until symptoms resolve or I get a positive. We have 7 kits left between us.

I woke with a sore throat last Thursday, negative lft both Thursday and Friday but got a positive on Saturday. Developed tickly cough on Saturday too.

It seems some with covid people start oft with a sore throat so I cancelled my Saturday plans, just in case, which was just as well.

You have a very sore throat so surely choir practice is out whether it is covid or not - because you have a virus.

Lunch tomorrow - take another test then and see how you feel. But if you still feel unwell dont go.

I would say given that you are around older and vulnerable avoiding them with any virus makes sense

LittleSwede · 21/02/2022 09:07

Meant to say that I personally wouldn't attend a choir practice with a sore throat, covid or not.

PuzzledObserver · 21/02/2022 09:13

You are all speaking sense.

I’m going to phone the people who organise the transport - they’ve probably got a protocol. Have already messaged friends re tomorrow and they said see how I feel, do another test tomorrow and decide then.

Given the elderly you are likely to be mixing with, Id get a PCR this morning, skip choir tonight and hope you have an answer by lunch tomorrow. But dont go to lunch if you are feeling rough. Other bugs do exist, and passing it on, covid or not, isnt fair sorry, I'm bitter than someone came into work stuffed full of cold, did the absolute minimium and passed on their bugs resulting in me spending 4 days in bed and didnt cover any of my work for me

balzamico · 21/02/2022 09:19

I started with a sore throat on a Sunday and didn't get a positive lft til the Wednesday- I would behave as if you have covid, at the least you don't want to pass on even a cold if that's what it turns out to be.

ShallWeTalkAboutBruno · 21/02/2022 09:20

It sounds like you’ve got… a sore throat.
Other viruses still exist.

ThisisMax · 21/02/2022 09:48

It took 5 days for me to get a positive. You are at peak infectiousness now so should isolate. I had a sore throat on a Monday- LFT positive on the Friday. PCR positive last week. Today is first day of negative LFT. My first symptom was 6th Feb.

littlerose12345 · 21/02/2022 09:59

Which LFT are you doing?
I started with sore throat too. Try a nose and throat LFT if you haven't done so as I don't really trust the nose only ones.

SirBale · 21/02/2022 10:06

I started with a sore throat and took almost 3 days of negative tests and the sore throat to have mostly gone before I tested positive!

Usernumber5253747293 · 21/02/2022 10:21

I would either do a pcr, we've had results within 12 hours recently or another lft tomorrow and the next day.

Even if you don't have covid, a sore throat is nasty and choir isn't ideal for you (it really won't help your throat) and the other members - singing might spread the virus that caused your sore throat. I would consider not doing the other activities too!

Even if it's not covid, no one wants to catch it!

Thisisconfusing · 21/02/2022 10:27

I had read that throat swabbing is best for picking up omicron . I had a slightly strange feeling in my throat . LFT negative even with throat swab . Next day same but the LFT (inc throat swab) was so faint with a barely there line if held up in a bright light (so faint DH said it was negative). I tested Positive by PCR next day but still LFT negative with nasal Only LFT . I’m not sure what the purpose of “warning” other people you could have Covid is ? If you think you could have isn’t it better that you just give choir a miss this week ? By the way a sore throat is a symptom of Omicron @ShallWeTalkAboutBruno so I’m not sure how you can imply it probably isn’t that . My throat actually became very severe .

TheUsualShitshow · 21/02/2022 10:33

I had this for three days before my positive test.

ifonly4 · 21/02/2022 11:18

DH had an incredibly sore throat when he had covid, so I wouldn't exclude it as a symptom. We both had symptoms and didn't test positive on a LFT, DH tested positive 1.5 days later, I was 2.5 days later.

Putting aside covid, are you will to risk making others ill? If you to decide to see others, I'd literally test just before you leave, as results can go from negative to positive within a couple of hours.

Sadly, anyone catching covid has to miss out on things, let people down. My DH was on call all week, and there was only him in the office that could do one job - he just wasn't capable and it was a struggle for work to find cover. Also, we were meant to be away, so had to cancel that.

Either way, hope whatever you have, doesn't end up being too bad.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 21/02/2022 11:21

I had a VERY sore throat a couple of weeks ago. Red, inflamed, lump at the back of my throat.
Covid negative 3 days in a row - could barely swallow.
Took a photo, doc diagnosed it as strep pharyngitis and gave me an online scrip for antibiotics - within 24h it was easing, and 2 days later it was So Much Better. Continued with the antibiotics for a week to be on the safe side (interesting new rules on them in Australia now!) but still covid neg.

It doesn't have to be covid.

PuzzledObserver · 21/02/2022 11:22

The LFT I’m doing is intended to be nose only, but I did my throat (well, the sore side) with the swab as well, because I had seen that throat swabs are better at picking up Omicron - also that sore throat is a common symptom with Omicron.

By warning people, I mean give them the opportunity to put alternative arrangements in place, E.g. the charity to find another driver in case I do test positive/feel worse by Wednesday, rather than leave it to the last minute.

DH had a group cancelled last Wednesday. On Monday, the leader emailed to say she was a close contact of someone who was positive, but had tested negative. On Tuesday she emailed again to say she was still negative, but feeling unwell, so she cancelled. On Thursday she emailed to tell them she had tested positive that morning.

OP this was my first symptom of my second bout of Covid 3 weeks ago. LFT was negative. I did a PCR, as I had symptoms but a negative LFT, and having had Covid before, I just had a gut feeling I had it again. PCR was positive. LFT turned positive the day after I did the PCR.
