Different makes of LFT and suddenly having positive result after negatives

DS tested positive last week. His LFTs were the ones with throat and nose swab, and on some of the days it was very hard to see a line at all. He was seemingly negative on Sunday and Monday, then today we used the first of a different box of LFTs which only need a nose swab, and he had a positive line again. He was isolating in his room and living room until Sunday, but DH has let him out and about in the house as he felt it was a bit mean to keep him cooped up when his tests seemed clear.

We are supposed to be going away next week, and it will be 14 days after he first tested positive but obviously we are trying to keep everyone else covid-free so we don't lose our holiday! He has been asymptomatic throughout, apart from a night with a mild cough about 5 days before he tested positive. We tested him after the coughing night, but he was negative that time. Other than that, completely well.

What are the chances someone else in the household will end up catching it? And has anyone else had a difference between different makes of test?

We have been getting differing results between the newer nose only LFTs and the old style nose and throat ones - it seems that the newer ones are more sensitive.

I've just posted on a similar thread that my son got a faint positive on a nose LFT this morning. I asked him to also do one of the old style out of interest and it was negative.

I would suggest using the newer one as you would use the older one, so swabbing the throat and nose with the smaller swab. You get the most accurate results this way
