Omicron - how long to get taste/smell back?

My smell has 100% gone - can't smell a thing - but my taste is probably 30% functioning.

If you've had Omicron, how long did it take your taste/smell to come back?

I should also say I'm on day 9, now testing negative.

I want to know too
Can’t smell a thing, taste is off but still there
only day 4 for me though

Sleepyteach · 03/02/2022 18:18

I’m 2 and a half weeks in and my sense of smell hasn’t come back yet really, I had nothing at all for a few days and now I just have the slightest bit of smell - I can breathe deeply over a bottle of lavender oil and know that there is a smell there but it could be anything! Taste wise, I’m better with savoury than sweet - sweet is very nondescript, i know something is sweet but not what it actually tastes of.

TSJ19 · 03/02/2022 18:30

Hi mine has completely come back now and i was like you lost my smell but could still taste a bit. I tested positive around 4 weeks ago i think.

zafferana · 03/02/2022 18:31

Oh dear, that's not good @Sleepyteach Sad

Okay @TSJ19, so maybe I have a couple of weeks of this to get through. It's really weird having no sense of smell at all - I don't think I've ever had that before. Even with bad colds you can still typically smell a bit, but I can't smell anything - not coffee, not garlic, not curry - the world smells of nothing at all and I miss smells! Well, not all smells obviously ... Grin

I know its horrible but mine did come back. I never lost my appetite while i had it either so i was quite upset i couldn't taste very well. I hope yours comes back soon.

zafferana · 03/02/2022 18:45

Thanks @TSJ19. Yeah, my appetite is fine too.

Both of mine went on Sunday afternoon, which was day 5 for me, but thankfully waited until I’d had dinner and a delicious bowl of sticky toffee pudding and ice cream before disappearing 10 minutes later.

I’m day 9 today and both are almost back.

KobaniDaughters · 03/02/2022 19:13

Taste disappeared on day 9 and slowly came back after a week

MadisonAvenue · 03/02/2022 19:13

No loss of appetite here either.

PandoraRocks · 03/02/2022 19:43

Tested positive on 28 December and still waiting for smell to come back fully.
I've been doing smell training since then and can smell some things right under my nose but have no ability to smell things in the atmosphere - air freshener, cooking etc. Yesterday I was really pleased because I could smell perfume but today my nose seems weaker again!

It's quite scary because there are people on Facebook groups that can't smell for months after Covid Confused. Very depressing not to be able to smell cut lemons.

Thank god my taste returned within 3 weeks. I can finally taste marzipan and onions, though not together obviously 🤣

PandoraRocks · 03/02/2022 19:45

Also, I had Covid two years ago and was quite rough but my senses were back to normal quicker.

NotQuiteUsual · 03/02/2022 23:28

I'm on day 5. Lost my sense of smell yesterday and parts of my tongue can't taste, but others can. I really hope they come back soon.

Redeyed · 03/02/2022 23:36

I'm 12 weeks in and my sense of smell and taste, whilst much better, still aren't fully right yet. I can't taste chocolate, grapes, oranges, or smell any form of scented candle, perfume and other things.

Watching with interest.

Jules58 · 04/02/2022 00:00

I started with Covid, 2 weeks ago, lost my Taste and smell, 6 days later, and neither have come back as yet.

PickAChew · 04/02/2022 00:07

smell any form of scented candle, perfume and other things. I wouldn't miss these things. I obviously don't want to personally test it but I'm wondering if they would no longer trigger a coughing fit or migraine.

RoyKentsChestHair · 04/02/2022 02:02

I’m day 17 and still no smell or taste to speak of. I almost tasted my coffee yesterday morning - just a feint flavour and then it went again! I’m hopeful it will gradually return now that I’ve had a glimpse, but it’s really annoying isn’t it! I love food, I work in the food industry and didn’t realise how often I have to sniff things and taste things in work!

I’ve heard that eating strong flavours can help reset your taste buds so I’m eating a lot of garlic and heavily salting my food etc but it’s taking a while.

zafferana · 04/02/2022 08:53

So from the answers so far it seems very variable, which is pretty much the story of Covid isn't it? It blows my mind that one virus can affect different people so differently. It does seem though that Day 5 is key - that's the day I started to feel worse again and the day I lost my sense of smell and taste.

Day 10 for me now and my breakfast tasted of nothing. I can taste sweet actually, so that part of my tongue is functioning, but I think it's the only bit.
