DS 6 has a very mild heart condition. Requires no medication and once yearly echocardiogram. No intervention necessary until at least adulthood if then and a minor procedure if so.

He's just been invited for the 5-11 Covid vaccine as it says he is in a high risk group. We've never had to treat him differently at all in Covid - in school throughout etc. although he was called early to have his flu nasal spray and GP receptionist said it was kids with ANY underlying condition.

Whole adult family triple jabbed and we fully back vaccines all our kids have had all of their on time etc.

Just not sure if DS really needs this vaccine? Don't want him to have side effects that could be worse than symptoms of Omicron?? Has anyone young child had the vaccine and if so please can you tell me how it went? Side effects and so on?? Thanks!

I think this is a conversation you need to have with his consultant about his specific level of risk.

Yeah, I agree with Fallagain. You need to speak to his consultant. And having a heart condition is having a underlying condition, however minor it is. Only who knows his condition can tell specific risk for him whether he should or should not have vaccine.

I agree speak to the consultant. One of my children has a minor heart condition which sounds similar to yours and we arnt eligible for the vaccine.

You're unlikely to get any responses from UK based people as they're only just about to start. There is a list of conditions and it may include congenital heart problems.

Thanks all- I have left a message for his consultant. The secretary had some guidance for the 12-15 age group which his specific consultant had written which she sent me but is going to find out about younger children. It would seem based on this guidance they would recommend one dose (he's been offered 2) unless the mild food allergies he has - nuts - count as a co-morbidity?? If so he would qualify.

Will wait to hear back but really wondered if anyone had a DC age 5-11 who has already had this vaccine and how it went. I'm not sure he'll even let someone near him with a needle?!? How would that work?

Honestly this vaccine has been rolled out elsewhere without issue and Omicron can be very unpleasant for children.
