A question for my fellow qualified nurse vaccinators

I was always taught that you don’t give a vaccine that someone else has prepared.
When working at the hub the pharmacist mixed the vaccine in the vial, then we drew it up into syringes ourselves. The vial came with a slip saying who had prepared it and when.
I’m now working somewhere else where the mixer mixes and draws up the vaccine. This mixer can be anyone, not necessarily medically trained.
So now I’m struggling with this. Please can anyone tell me if there is legislation that documents that this is acceptable, as I’m protective of my PIN number.
Thanks.

You need to be confident that it has been correctly stored and prepared at all stages. I assume you've read and signed the national protocol - that lays out which parts can be delegated to unqualified people. Your centre needs to have robust procedures so you know who has done each stage and only give the vaccine if you are confident it has been correctly stored and prepared.

I’m not confident in the preparers as admin are being asked to do it. Apparently this is OK as it’s within the protocol.

The syringes are being dished out, there is no way of knowing who mixed which and when.

I wouldn't be happy with that, unless I was confident that the admin staff were being very closely supervised. It's your pin on the line at the end of the day. Do other vaccinators at your site have the same concerns?

SomewhereOnlyIKnow · 28/01/2022 12:53

No, but they’ve not been vaccinating as long as me.
If you’ve never done it the old way you assume that this is ok.

I work at a few different sites with different set ups none like this - some I do it all myself - others they are prepared by others but clearly labelled so I know exactly who prepared it, who checked it and what time etc. If its an option to work elsewhere I would do that.

Thanks .

Sounds worrying, can you ask your professional body for advice?
