Son's chest pain after Moderna vaccination

Has anyone else had chest pain after the Moderna vaccination? My son aged 20 years had his booster vaccination yesterday. He feels under the weather which he was expecting, so has taken 2 paracetamol. But he also has some mild chest pain, which to me sounds like indigestion, that came on about an hour ago. He's had some indigestion medicine so we are seeing if that kicks in over the next hour.

The Info you are given is clear...
Chest pain call 111

elizadoalittle · 08/01/2022 20:42

The info is actually... chest pain call 999

My friend’s son had myocarditis after his vaccine, (Pfizer) . Your son needs to be checked out.

Both DP and I had our moderna boosters just over a week ago, neither of us had any chest pains. I'd definitely call 111/999 - if the meds help you've not lost anything in dialling now as it could take a while to get through

Yes, he needs to be checked out.

Take him to the hospital or call 999. Never ignore chest pain.

Chest pain has gone now, approx 1 hour after indigestion medicine. So hoping it was just that. Husband not in the least bit concerned. Thinks I am overreacting. Have told son to let me know if pain comes back at all.

Chest pain following vaccination can be minor and non-serious (e.g. due to non-heart muscle inflammation, costochondritis etc) however it can also be very serious and needs immediate medical attention. Following an MRNA vaccine you should be watchful for myocarditis and pericarditis. You will not be able to tell what is serious and what is non-serious without medical testing.

Even if the chest pain has resolved for now he needs to be seen by a doctor for an ECG and to have his troponin levels checked.

I would get your ds to see someone about this. Myocarditis has a higher risk with young males. I would just get him checked out just to make sure.

My teenage dd got her 2nd one today and we were warned quite clearly about chest pains/palpitations being a new side effect. They said nhs24 or gp tho. Also said more common in boys.

Scottishflower65 · 08/01/2022 21:31

Well known adverse reaction. It’s why some vaccines no longer allowed in some countries in younger people.

Needs to be seen A&E asap.

JaneJeffer · 08/01/2022 21:41

Get it checked out.

blameitonthecaffeine · 08/01/2022 21:41

I had mild chest pain. On the left side but much more to the side than the heart. I think it might have been lymph nodes which apparently a lot of people have problems with after moderna. Lasted about 9 hours.

To update this. Son took indigestion medicine and within an hour felt ok. Chest pains didn't come back and that was nearly three weeks ago now. Nothing since then, so fingers crossed it was nothing sinister.
