What stops cough and why can’t I buy night nurse?!

It’s me again. Covid queen. Caught it for a third time.

I just really need night nurse but I can’t order any on Amazon, my family can’t find any in the shops, what am I doing wrong that I can’t order night nurse?!

Night nurse is only available behind the counter in a pharmacy. Day nurse can be ordered but not night or the combined one.

Its normally behind the counter at a pharmacy and you need to ask for it

You can buy online from online chemists but have to complete a questionnaire/answer questions first

I have never found cough medicine to actually stop a cough. If you have a respiratory infection the best it might do is sooth your throat. It's just sugary syrup, possibly with antihistamine to aid sleep.

The covid cough made me vomit quite often. In hospital they made the coughing patients sleep sitting up, or the worse ones on their front, you could try that?

Night nurse isn't a cough medicine. It does suppress a cough though. Something pharmacies won't sell you it for so don't mention coughing at all when you buy it.

Lloyds Pharmacy do their own generic version of Night Nurse which is great and a few quid cheaper!

Not sure about the cough (I never had one) but Night Nurse was essential to help me get restful sleep when I had Covid. I hope that you find someone to get you some OP.

A natural linctus will also work: lemon, honey, ginger and boiling water. Then a paracetamol/ibuprofen dependent on symptoms. I'm going off of what a pharmacist confirmed and worked for my DC when quite ill.

Bronco stops work a treat, although they are quite pricey

Piriton liquid is very good for a night time cough too.

There is advice that lying on your front can help with breathing, if ill with covid.

If I need to clear my chest, I have found sitting upright in a comfy armchair can be more comfortable than lying in bed.

I find a V shaped pillow helpful at night when I have a cough.

Paracetamol with codeine in it - codeine suppresses the cough. Just don't take it for me than 3 or 4 days.

This may be totally 100% psychosomatic BUT, at my coughing wits end 2 nights ago I tried vicks on my feet (under socks) and it really did work!

Jakemans (black version) and sleeping on my front worked best for me

This works for me too! Thought it was absolute nonsense and tried it as a last resort when I was desperate to stop coughing at night and nothing else had worked. I'd even tried drinking raw honey through the night when I woke up, nothing could stop the coughing. The vicks on the feet worked straight away! Slept through the night for the first time in days.

Also, if you don't need the other ingredients in night nurse (paracetamol and decongestant) and just want the good sleep then the ingredient you need is phenergan. It's an antihistamine which makes you sleepy and I used it during covid to help me rest at night. You can buy it online.

Pholcodeine linctus is about the only thing that helps suppress a cough for me.

OP, do you use Facebook or next door app? I'm someone local would fetch meds for you if you put a post up.

Jakemans cough sweets are the only thing that can ease a cough for me. Vicks vapour rub also helps.

Husband swears by a couple of teaspoons of runny honey taken as you would cough syrup.
