Blocked ear, painful ear/throat complications?

I had covid just before Christmas and felt awful as you can imagine. Got a blocked ear and awful sore throat which has not resolved in over 10 days (since it blocked not since positive test) other ear comes and goes, at night my whole head feels so full of pressure it gets a lot worse when I lay down in bed. I’ve been on penicillin for a week last week too (issued over the phone) How much longer will my painful ear and throat continue?! I’ve really had enough, 18 weeks pregnant too and not a happy bunny at all.

I had covid before Christmas, am on day 9 now. Yes I can feel ear pain too- it comes on really suddenly and is horrible! Both ears. I feel like there is lot going on sinus-wise, I have had lots of congestion too. Am going to the pharmacy tomorrow to get some sudafed for myself (if I get a negative test,; haven't got one yet).
Glad it's not just me! I have found that hot drinks and sitting up does help a lot. Hope you feel better soon.

This is quite weird. Woke up in the middle of the night 14th Dec, developing conjunctivitis. Felt a bit bunged up but not bad and got antibacterial eyedrops. Had my booster on Thursday 16th. Over the next few days into the weekend I developed bunged up ears, slight bit of pain which went with painkillers but since then have had deafness and feeling like my head is underwater. Woke early hours of Wednesday 22nd with one ear crackling, bubbling and a bit of liquid coming out. Kept me awake for over an hour. Woke again but both ears still fully blocked. Got a doctors appointment to make sure but he couldn't see any infection. Slight cough developing but no real sinus pain or congestion that i would usually get with a head cold (have small tubes like my mum and prone to head colds, sinusitis etc)Negative lateral flow tests up til then but doc suggested a PCR. Eventually got a negative result on boxing day. My ears have definitely improved but still quite blocked, worse in the night and when I wake up. Nothing is clearing them!

I had this, blocked ear, sore throat, I ended up with tonsillitis and really unwell, the first lot of penicillin didn't work, I had to have something else, I think it was Erythromycin but I'm not 100%.

My GP told me not to take Sudafed, said it did more harm than good after a three days, told me to stop taking it and use beconase nasal spray instead of Sudafed.

LittleMG · 28/12/2021 21:08

Mine was the same! First night kept me awake and was bloody painful! And tiny bit of liquid coming out. I’ve wondered if I’ve had something as well as covid???? I assumed it was the covid that had done it. Hope you feel better soon it’s awful making me very angry at times 😂

@tinseleverywhere2021 oh wow I know what you mean I’ve been so poorly! I wonder if it’s worth ring from again. I’ve been negative for covid since Thursday. I wonder if I need a different antibiotic, honestly I still feel so crap but I have had covid. 🤷‍♀️

Nasal spray is really good for unblocking ears!

tinseleverywhere2021 · 28/12/2021 21:16

I didn’t start to feel really unwell with my throat until day 11 after my isolation period ended. I felt worse every day until day 20 when I got the second lot of antibiotics- had a month off work! Sick note said COVID for the entire month.

My GP said that 60% of people she spoke to with COVID ended up with a secondary infection.

Thanks for replying x do you guys think I need to go back to the dr or give it a bit longer? I know of course you’re not drs but just as a bit of advice from a human being so I can weigh it up. Drs is such a faff.

Sea salt nasal spray is your friend here.

I suffer from this and copious amounts of anti biotics don't work because it's the sinuses blocking the drainage apparently.

Was prescribed three times ear drops etc over the phone until eventually a lovely gp wanted to see me

Ear drum was bulging because of the built up fluid behind it so told me to use becomase nasal spray as it has a mild steroid in it and it worked a treat.

I also bought the sea salt nasal spray on Amazon and whenever I can feel it coming on I use that.

tinseleverywhere2021 · 28/12/2021 21:44

Won’t hurt to call the dr Little, especially as you’re pregnant.

It was more than a blocked ear/sore throat for me, obviously sinus pain/blockage but my tonsils were visibly swollen with white spots and I had a 39 degree temperature. I felt really poorly and wasn’t improving.

I had sepsis last year and wasn’t prepared to wait too long, by day five on penicillin I’d had enough of no improvement.

JS87 · 28/12/2021 21:50

Steroid nasal spray if allowed in pregnancy. If not a saline spray. When you spray it tilt your head forward so that your face is looking at the floor. This helps get it into the Eustachian tube and into the middle ear. I’d also take an antihistamine

lotusbell · 29/12/2021 09:26

Just a note, my doctor couldn't see infection but suggested nasal spray and antihistamine. Have tried both but probably not for long enough, will persevere. Hope you're feeling better soon,OP.
