Wondering what most people think will be announced by way of the next covid update/additional measures/restrictions (or confirmation of none) for England and when?

Sunday

MoggyP · 25/12/2021 22:59

What - no idea

When - not sure - no data being published today and tomorrow, and with two bank holidays following the 'sunday' factor will be writ large

I guess the key indicator will be the number landing in hospital in the omicron hotspots. Will,p any reduction in the %age (if it is indeed milder) be enough to offset the vastly higher number of cases?

ChristmasPuddingParty · 25/12/2021 23:27

Interesting that there’s no data being published for a few days. Obvious now you say it!

My young adult DC think the PM will have already decided on next steps including timing but I’m not convinced.

Monday 27th: wfh, delayed return to school/uni, circuit breaker of some kind of limited mixing for 2 weeks.

crankysaurus · 25/12/2021 23:44

We're already on wfh if possible, I so don't want any delay to the start of school.

RumJerrySailorRum · 25/12/2021 23:46

Pubs shut before NYE, announced Wednesday, to come into immediate effect.

WFH for all other sectors. Home schooling.

Mid January, pubs still shut but schools back.

End of January, pubs still shut, phased return to office work.

Mid Feb, after Valentine's, pubs open if you've got tables outside!

WeAreTheHeroes · 25/12/2021 23:49

Hospitality severely limited after Tuesday. Possibly two or three households can get together to celebrate NYE but you won't be eating out/going to organised events.

Redtartanshoes · 25/12/2021 23:55

It’s my birthday on Wednesday.‘we’ve got a few nights in a hotel booked… I really don’t want to go and waste ££ if everything going to be shut…. I was thinking a bit more hopeful. Will they really shut with immediate effect? A lot of places will have food/drink that would go to waste…

Sparklingbrook · 25/12/2021 23:59

No idea. Didn't get a crystal ball from Father Christmas sadly. It's all guesswork and speculation at this point.

ChristmasPuddingParty · 26/12/2021 23:02

Obviously any of posting are just speculating sparklingbrook hence my OP asking for thoughts and wondering was others were thinking may happen. Wasn’t expecting Boris to post with the official line or for anyone to have fully functional crystal ball! You win the prize for stopping the thread dead in its tracks though Xmas Wink

Lockdown as of 5th January

Mittenmob · 26/12/2021 23:06

If he announces homeschooling then he'll have a second announcement warning the public of a woman in her late 30s going on a hulk-style rage rampage.

Porfre · 26/12/2021 23:06

I think theres something in the pipeline.
We should hear more tomorrow.
I think he's trying his best to.avoid more restrictions.
Didnt they do a blackout of the covid infection rate for the last couple of days? I think hes trying to hold out til 1st Jan so that we can get New Yaers out of the way.

When the numbers are released we'll have our answer. I'm hoping for limited restrictions. That start after 1st Jan.

I don’t have a crystal ball or magical powers that stop people posting. 🤷‍♀️ Presumably there’s now three or four threads started today asking the same. Xmas Grin
littlebilliie · 26/12/2021 23:12

I think schools will stay open. I do think now Christmas is over I think there is much less sentimentality about New Year. I think social event will break now

rrhuth · 26/12/2021 23:14

The dithering mess that is our PM will try to delay any action I assume.

TokyoSushi · 26/12/2021 23:14

I'm not sure it'll be that bad, leaks tomorrow, announcement on Tuesday perhaps.

Something like masks in more places, table service and limits to number of households in hospitality, maybe something about mixing in homes to try to curb NYE parties, but suspect that bit will be more guidance than law.

It feels very much like locking the stable door after the horse has bolted, the numbers were crazy before the Christmas mixing, and I suspect will only have got significantly worse. But if the hospital numbers are still manageable, perhaps we've missed the window now where severe restrictions would have helped and we just have to see how it will play out.

I think we have about a 95% chance of schools going back. I think they know that this is just so so awful for parents and children alike that it will be the last to go.

I'm not sure we'll ever see a 'You must stay at home' style lockdown again and I desperately hope I'm right!

I follow the people who do the Covid figures on Twitter and they were having this weekend off and will start up again tomorrow.
comedycentral · 26/12/2021 23:16

I think it will be largely like April 2021 restrictions but nothing that involves them having to pay furlough. Schools won't close. WFH guidance for a few months for those that can.

Hospitals aren't as busy as expected so hopefully it will be good news and further plans to vaccine as many as possible.

Wizzbangfizz · 26/12/2021 23:17

Hopefully nothing, if anything rule of six and table service

user1471443411 · 26/12/2021 23:17

I think there will be an announcement tomorrow. I'd be very surprised if there will be a full on lockdown, I think more likely it will be warnings and dire forecasts. Then, a few days to a week later, when the media have whipped everyone into a frenzy, there will be a 'circuit breaker lockdown' or a lockdown light.
Could start 5th Jan, I've seen a few people mention that date.

Bagadverts · 26/12/2021 23:26

I doubt till Wednesday but with leaking of possible changes. Boris has to get the changes through Parliament. He will want to minimise political consequences. Public mood on different options may persuade a few more Tory back benchers to vote with the government. Still may need opposition support.

The longer scientists are saying we need stricter measures the harder for Starmer to tell Labour to vote against new measures. Otherwise accused of playing politics by not supporting scientists and the nhs.

mnahmnah · 26/12/2021 23:28

I don’t think there will be any lockdown or school closures. It will all be hospitality and leisure related.

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 26/12/2021 23:38

I just don't care anymore
