Have you ever lost your sense of smell with a cold?

Just that really.

When I lost my sense of smell and taste with covid it was really strange. I could breather perfectly well, but even with my face shoved in something stinky, I wouldn't have had a clue.

When people say they have lost their sense of smell with a cold, do they mean it just disappeared, like with covid, or do they mean they were so bunged up they couldn't smell anything? It must have been pretty rare before, surely?

A few months ago I had a cold. Kept testing negative on LFT. I woke up one morning and couldn't smell anything. Couldn't event smell an open bottle of Olbas oil held directly under my nose. This only lasted for a couple hours. It was strange. Don't know about taste because I didn't eat anything during that time

Yes, I do frequently with a cold. I can’t even smell fabric conditioner when I do. I’ve got a really nasty cold at the moment (four LFTs and one PCR down, so not Covid) couldn’t smell my very strong perfume this morning.

RoyalFamilyFan · 24/12/2021 09:52

Yes it was rare. I have said with a cold before the pandemic that I lost my sense of smell. In reality, it was dulled, but I could still smell very strong smells.

BigButtons · 24/12/2021 09:52

I always lose my sense of taste and small with a cold, every single time. Lasts for about three days.

SheWoreYellow · 24/12/2021 09:53

I haven’t had anything like the loss of taste I had with covid and then the distorted sense of smell.

Have you ever lost your sense of smell with a cold?

Invariably!

Movinghouseatlast · 24/12/2021 09:54

I did, years ago, but it was flu not a cold. My friend also lost hers and it didn't come back for a year- again a few years ago.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/12/2021 09:57

No I haven't.

Ds's sense of smell hasn't really come back yet from having covid in early October.

Svara · 24/12/2021 09:57

Yes, normally happens to me with a cold, which affects my sense of taste. Same happened with covid.

pluggee · 24/12/2021 09:57

As I've got older a bad cold really bungs me up so I can't smell much.

Daisy829 · 24/12/2021 09:59

I do occasionally. I’ve definitely lost my sense of taste before as I remember being devastated (I love my food!) I’m often congested which does effect my taste more than my smell.

Poshjock · 24/12/2021 10:00

Yes but it was totally different from the loss with Covid. I wasn’t unwell at all with Covid and no cold/flu symptoms, just taste/smell loss, and it lasted about 3 weeks.

ListenLinda · 24/12/2021 10:02

Yes, every time I have a cold I lose both senses. Currently fight one now, it’s started to come back this morning. It’s hit and miss, hope it clears up by tomorrow!

TeeBee · 24/12/2021 10:02

Yep often.

Exhausteddog · 24/12/2021 10:04

Yes I have a couple of times. It made going past LUSH much more bearable!Grin

Exhausteddog · 24/12/2021 10:05

(And changing nappies when DC were small!)

shouldistop · 24/12/2021 10:06

A couple of times.

mumofEandE · 24/12/2021 10:07

Last week I started off with a sore throat and a cold - I then lost my sense of smell and taste!
I also had fatigue/ nausea / aches / cough.
Numerous LFTs and a PCR were all negative though!

Nellodee · 24/12/2021 10:13

I’d never had it before covid and it seemed really strange to me. Could have done with it lasting a bit longer, as I lost interest in food I couldn’t taste. I feel sorry for all the people who’ve lost it over Christmas though.

Yes always usually lose smell/ taste with a cold! This was happening years before covid.

It goes for a couple of days usually and is there even if I don't have a blocked nose.

Nidan2Sandan · 24/12/2021 10:16

Yes, but only with a bad cold where all my senses get dulled. I also lose what little hearing I have.

When I had covid I didnt lose them at all.

MrsLeclerc · 24/12/2021 10:20

Yes, I was sniffing straight from a tub of Vicks but could only sense a menthol tingle rather than smell it. A few days later I could faintly smell it.

One plus was that chopping onions didn’t make my eyes water for the first time ever! Grin

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/12/2021 10:36

I don't think I've ever lost sense of smell or taste completely with a cold, but it's definitely less strong. I remember losing my sense of taste after a D&V bug, which was a weird feeling. Everything had texture but not taste. I can't remember whether I lost my sense of smell or not.

I'm just getting to the end of my Covid isolation and my sense of smell and taste has stayed but, like a cold, it's all a bit muted.

changingstages · 24/12/2021 10:42

Just once, when I was at university. Lost taste and smell - I only properly realised when I went for a Mexican meal with my partner and could just feel everything rather than taste it. I still remember how odd and depressing it was!

CalmDownBoris72 · 24/12/2021 11:06

Yes, many times pre covid and once since covid. It’s a regular cold symptom for me.
