Anyone had negative LFR but positive PCR

Currently waiting for PCR results as been in contact with positive case. Not really any real symptoms just a sore throat and lots of phlegm, worse when I'm in bed.
four LFT from yesterday morning up until
Today negative, could PCR be positive still?

I had covid back in September caught from DD who got it at school - lft on the Sunday was negative pcr on the same day came back positive - I only had cold symptoms.

ChristmasRobins · 18/12/2021 08:07

Yes very common. My kids both had covid, very unwell with all the symptoms. We did LFTs while awaiting PCR results- all negative, then the PCR was positive. False negatives are very common on LFTs.

Catipepo · 18/12/2021 08:09

Agreed with others, is not unheard of. You can try swabbing yourself throat with LFT as more sensitive in picking up from there.
May also just be another illness! Hope you feel better soon.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/12/2021 08:17

Loads of people have. Myself and DS did.

ThirdElephant · 18/12/2021 08:20

My DBro was negative on LFT but positive on PCR. Asymptotic too- only tested because he was a close contact. He kept doing the LFTs all the way through the ten days- did eventually develop mild symptoms- but never had a positive LFT.

PurpleFeather · 18/12/2021 08:26

Following as my dd has had a few negative LFT and is awaiting PCR result. Sore throat, some coughing, snotty. I kind of think it must be Covid😬😬😬

MrsAlwaysRight · 18/12/2021 08:29

Definitely possible. We have been testing daily as eldest tested positive last weekend. Yesterday my husband and youngest had a positive lateral flow, mine was negative. All had PCR test 2 hours later. Mine and husbands came back positive. Still waiting for youngest's result.

SpringheelJack · 18/12/2021 08:30

LFTs give out a lot of false negatives. It's reasonably common.

PurpleBirch · 18/12/2021 08:31

Yes- 3 out of 6 us had negative LFT then positive PCRs

loosinggame · 18/12/2021 08:35

Oh no Sad I'm really hoping it is just some kind of cold or other virus but sounds possible that it could be positive. Thank you replying and I hope everyone who tested positive is doing ok

Yes, myself and my dd did. Negative lft Positive pcr

I think LFTs are rubbish. I know far too many people who have had negative lfts and positive pcrs. I get angry with people who have Covid symptoms and say “but I’ve done a lft” as they merrily cough in your presence - they’re not for people with symptoms because of how unreliable they are.

They're about 86% accurate, IIRC. They shouldn't be used if symptomatic, but PCRs shouldn't be used if asymptotic unless a close contact because of the pressure it adds to the system.
threebillboards · 18/12/2021 10:14

Dh did so quite common.

Sparkle275 · 18/12/2021 10:34

Yes unfortunately that can happen. All 5 of us caught covid at the beginning of the month. 3 out of 5 of us tested positive on a lateral flow first but DH and DS were testing negative but the PCR was positive. It was a day or 2 after the positive PCR that they were both showing as positive on LF, they took one out of curiosity. Hope you feel better soon x

DragonMovie · 18/12/2021 16:59

@ThirdElephant I’m not sure they’re as effective as 86%. I think their reliability also depends on how accurately they’re used so home use has way lower reliability than hospital use. Though the new scientist says that PCRs are arguably too sensitive, so maybe in theory it’s possible to have a positive PCR and a negative LFT and the LFT is right? Though a person believing they’re positive when they’re not is not as dangerous as a person believing they’re negative when they’re not.

Anyway LFTs are fine for people who are asymptomatic and PCRs are great for people who have symptoms - and not the other way around. And I wish there was clearer messaging on that.

KnottyKnitting · 18/12/2021 20:03

A friend of mine was negative on 7 LFTs. Her DS had tested positive which is why she was doing regular LFTs. On day 4 she had a PCR fully expecting it to be negative ( her DS is an adult and had been fully isolating in the family home) she was positive and only on day 5 started to get a + on an LFT. Feels like she has a heavy cold.

LaMariposa · 18/12/2021 20:25

DH was in contact with a positive case Monday but has had multiple negative LFTs and PCRs since. He has also had a pretty bad week of being ill, coughing and headaches.
I had a slight sore throat and also headaches/backache and it felt very like Covid to me. But again negative LFTs and PCR.
I have to remember there are other nasty bugs out there - we’ve probably just got one of those via the children.
