Covid symptoms in 15 month old

My 15 month old DS has been really under the weather since Sunday.

His temperature keeps creeping up to between 39 and 40 when ibuprofen wears off.
Calpol doesn’t seem to be doing anything at all to help the temp but nurofen brings it down to about 37 within about 90 mins. It then gradually creeps back up again.

Only other symptom he has is a blocked nose and a mild cough.
I rang GP yesterday who wouldn’t see him in case Covid and advised to book PCR which I have taken him to this morning. He also prescribed antibiotics in case it’s something else which we started yesterday but they don’t seem to be helping.

The reason I’m posting is everything I had read indicated that covid symptoms are mild in little ones but this is awful. I just wondered if anyone could share what symptoms their little ones had if they were positive with covid.

My LO tested negative for Covid but he’s just had a really horrible chest infection with those symptoms that you mention. Temperature very high and hard to keep down with medications.
From what I’ve read, the “common” bugs are much worse for little ones than Covid is!

Also - we visited the local A&E. the dr there said why temp that keeps spiking after 48hrs of the Calpol/nurofen combo, bring them in to be checked.
Hopefully you have his PCR back soon and know either way if it’s Covid.

Take him to hospital if you need to, OP. I was SO apologetic about doing that when I was sent there, but they didn’t bat an eyelid. They said covid is already there, so their job is to help.
If you need to, don’t think, just go. Be nice about it though- wear a mask yourself and keep as much distance from people as possible. Hope your little one feels better very soon!

Thank you everyone for your responses.

Unfortunately we have had to take him to a and e a few times over the last few months and every time they have completely messed us around.
We had a temp that we couldn’t get down last month and the GP sent us straight to a and e. They just left us in a side room for hours waiting for his temp to come down even though I explained that this is exactly why I had come in and it wasn’t just going to come down of it’s own accord. It was infuriating. They did us a prescription for antibiotics but then wouldn’t allow us to leave to go get them all the while my son was getting more and more tired and distressed. That time it was tonsillitis but he is eating and drinking so I don’t think it’s that this time.

This time I have antibiotics from GP in case it’s an ear infection so should probably wait to see if they help but I will definitely take him down if he gets any other concerning symptoms.

It’s just so stressful and upsetting. The waiting is killing me. Just wish I’d start seeing some improvement in the temperature. When temp is managed to 37 or so he is fine in himself and playing happily. It just keeps coming back Sad

If it is covid I have no idea how long I can expect this to last either

My sister is an A&E nurse. She said they are seeing a rise in children being admitted with covid problems. She said the children they are seeing are mainly displaying abdominal and blood pressure problems. The department is also extremely busy at the moment.

Is there any chance he could have tonsillitis? I would contact the surgery again or out-of-hours and get him seen.

StopThisTrain22 · 14/12/2021 15:53

He doesn’t seem to have a sore throat and is eating and drinking ok so I’m not sure about tonsillitis. When he’s had it before I could barely get any food in him at all. I’m definitely going to insist on f2f appt when pcr is back
