Anyone else finding it impossible to book an appointment? It keeps booting me out and asking for the nhs number again. Wondering whether it’s me or the website…?

I think Boris is a bit like the boss that promises people the world without actually thinking or planning it through, and then expects their staff to rush around finding solutions and to implement it after the fact. Of course what he should have done was inform vaccine centres etc, allow them to give realistic numbers and have the system good to go.

aftonwater · 13/12/2021 07:57

The decision to accelerate the booster programme was made yesterday. Those who organise and run the vaccination centres heard the announcement at the same time as everyone else. Please give us some time to add in the extra capacity.

DrunkenKoala · 13/12/2021 08:37

It was on a loop at about midnight last night. I’m already booked on but not until end of Dec and was trying to see if I could bring appointment forward. I’m mid 40s so definitely eligible to book and bring it forward if there are more appointments.

Starlightstarbright1 · 13/12/2021 08:44

My friends job organisiese the vaccines in the area. She only found out at the news confeence she said in a couple of days there will be loads more appointments.

I managed to book my Ds's last night.

InDubiousBattle · 13/12/2021 08:50

Me and dh booked our boosters last night. When we first went on the site we were placed in a queue of around 30,000 and it said we would have a 15 minute wait but it was actually less than 5. Booked for Wednesday at a local site. We're over 40 though, I don't know if that made a difference.

RedToothBrush · 13/12/2021 08:57

Its pissed me off enormously.

Im in my 40s and know of numerous people in this age group or even in 50s who since they had their 2nd jab in May or June were eligible before others in their own age band. The original 6 month cut off limited when they could book. Then they changed it to 3 months after booster and this opened it up to even more people who weren't at risk of waning to the same degree. But could you get an earlier appointment? Not easily. And even if you did you risked being turned away at the clinic because they hadn't updated their own rules.

I personally booked the day before it was officially announced it had rolled out to over 40s at 6 months and booked the earliest appointment I could. Every time i have tried to rebook I couldn't find anything sooner than 2 days before.

Even more annoyingly is when we booked 39 year old DH on Saturday (before the official announcement that bookings were open to over 30s) there wasn't a thing before jan.

We both tried to rebook last night. He was getting a completely different list of availability and locations to me. At the same time. In the end he managed to rebook for a day before me.

But theres still nothing locally sooner.

And im hearing of multiple people who are in 40s and 50s completely unable to get anything sooner either.

Walk ins aren't really an option if you need childcare or work.

The net result of not having appointments available earlier for people in 40s, 50s and even 60s who are already at or over 6months past their 2nd to rebook when you announce a big drive to vaccinate, is that come Wednesday when they suddenly have all these new appointments, you will get low risk, recently dosed 18 to 30 year olds getting all the new appointments which are sooner because everyone older will have lost the will to live trying to navigate the crashy website and having no joy with getting appointments sooner.

Its a farce. There is no planning to it.

Its a free for all which pits 18 year olds against people who are much more at risk if waning never mind the risk of infection from omicron (40s and 50s had AZ, under 40s Pfizer).

It really does feel like an every man for himself dogfight.

eightlivesdown · 13/12/2021 09:08

I went to a walk-in yesterday, open 0900-1400. I arrived at 1000, no jabs available. Tried to book on-line, lots of availability. Until I tried to book a slot, it was unavailable. Go back a step to select another slot, which kicked me back several steps, so I had to start over. Select another slot, unavailable. And so it went on. The system knows which slots are filled when you try to book one, but continues to display them.

Then later I saw that 1 million jabs will be available every day.

Can't help feeling the talk is better then the reality.

The trouble is that many of the vaccine centres and most of the GP hubs were closed down in the summer and it takes time to open them up, re-engage staff and get things moving once again.

Yeah exactly, should have given them notice.

Its been apparent for at least the last 6 weeks that the booster programme wasn't keeping pace with the number of people over 50 eligible at the 6 month cut off. Then they opened it up to over 40s at 6 months plus on 20th November. It was even more apparent there was a problem after that decision. And even more so when they decided anyone over 40 at 3 months post 2nd jab with the intention of rolling out to younger groups. There were lots and lots of people questioning capacity issues even at that stage. The numbers weren't good enough.

The issue with lack of capacity and vaccine centres has not come out of the blue. The government will almost certainly have been away that key targets by certain dates were not being achieved probably a good two weeks before the public started to notice uptake and roll out was lagging. We still have a particular issue with some of the most elderly and accessibility to boosters because of mobility issues too.

Then the government suddenly turn up the heat, bring in the army and open it up to all over 18 year olds before new year!!!

Its utterly bonkers and was a crisis seen coming a mile off even before omicron.

BarefootHippieChick · 13/12/2021 09:50

It's bloody annoying, it's like mass hysteria. Stuff the boosters, I've been trying for days just to get my dd her second one and now I can't even get onto the site 🤬 It's like panic buying toilet roll all over again.

How would that have been possible, given that the risk of Omnicron has only been evident in the last week? Doctors and nurses need time to cancel their current work in order to restart vaccinating.
vera99 · 13/12/2021 10:38

This is what a Johnson fucking led government looks like perpetual chaos at a time of national emergency.

Player067 · 13/12/2021 10:42

Now they've run out of lateral flow tests - there are no home tests available! FFS.

DeclareThePenniesOnYourEyes · 13/12/2021 10:45

I managed to book mine about 3.30am. If you don’t have any lucky today maybe set an alarm and try that tomorrow. Worth a go.

Florianus · 13/12/2021 10:46

The issue with lack of capacity and vaccine centres has not come out of the blue.

True, but before Omnicron appeared there was a lot of pressure on doctors (in particular) to get back to their normal work of dealing with the backlog in hospitals and GP surgeries.

Except people were told by the PM to book s booster, and told by the PM not to buy bog roll.

So the opposite.

No “a bit like” about it.
Ohjustboreoff · 13/12/2021 11:20

I'm a 48 year old frontline emergency worker, we get zero special treatment. I've been trying to book my booster since yesterday morning but I can get as far as picking a time at the vaccination center then it kicks me back to the beginning. Total farce!!!

TheVampiresWife · 13/12/2021 11:31

Completely ridiculous.

100% agree
VoyageInTheDark · 13/12/2021 16:51

Managed to book my booster in the last hour after it crashing all day so might be worth trying again
