Will track and trace tell me whether it was Omicron?

It's Test and Trace and they wont know straight away which variant you have as it takes time to sequence the sample to find out

You PCR Test result should tell you if it's likely to be omicron as that is obvious in a test. They then need to do more testing to be certain but it should be quick.

They have a good indication from pcr as it has an S gene drop out which Delta varient doesn't have. In Scotland test and protect have been contacting people to say isolate as looks like omicron.

I mean household should isolate. Of course person with covid should isolate for any varient.

There was a thread where the positive person wasn’t informed but their close contacts were. That was right at the beginning of the new variant, so hopefully it’s working better now.

My DC has just tested positive and when NHS test and trace phoned they said it "might" be omicron so are sending us further PCR tests to check. I asked if that meant the whole household needed to isolate and they said no. Seems odd because if it is omnicrom by the time the tests arrive, are sent back and tested we could have been spreading it around for days... 🤷🏻‍♀️

They don't do full sequencing of all tests, I think I read that it's about 1 in 5 tests that are checked for the exact variant.

If you are positive and if they do the more extensive check for variant and if that shows Omicron then your contacts will be told that they need to isolate even if they are vaccinated.

There's supposed to be a 'stealth' omicron variant that is not showing so well on testing. I'll see of I can find a link
