Booking booster at 5 months for appointment in a months time

sheeplikessleep · 07/12/2021 08:58

I’m over 40 and can now book online as 5 months after second jab. Can’t get appointment until 11th January, which is just after 6 months.

Given new guidance is changing to 3 months, are others in a similar situation holding off booking an appointment until you can get one sooner? Or should I book one for middle of January?

Thanks

My local walk-in is doing boosters from 3 months already. Check yours.

AlexandraEiffel · 07/12/2021 09:03

Yes I'm in same position. But mine is a bit earlier so just before Xmas, and I don't fancy the side effects as an Xmas present. I'm checking every day in the hope it gets shifted. In your shoes I'd book, then rebook/drop in if it does move. I should take my own advice really and book for just after Xmas but I'm hoping for a drop in next week.

@YesThisIsMe how do you find out? I've been scouring social media but can't find anything helpful

YesThisIsMe · 07/12/2021 09:13

I'm afraid I happened to have a pre-booked booster there and just noticed and shared a photo of the sign at the venue saying that they were doing 3 month walk-ins with my local social media.

Have you googled for walk-in vaccine centres in your LA? Whereabouts are you?

AlexandraEiffel · 07/12/2021 10:08

Oh interesting! I'm in Yorkshire. I've been checking the walk ins I know of online and there's nothing to say they'll do 3 months but I'm not near enough to pop and check

sheeplikessleep · 07/12/2021 10:37

Thankyou, I’ll check my local walk in clinic ..

I’m near Winchester but they’re all 16 miles away at least

I did get a text last time to say I could rearrange to earlier appointment when they changed it last time, unfortunately it was day before jab so no use.

I've had NHS text to book but it then asks if I'm at increased risk & refers me to check with GP if not sure. My 182 days are up next week so will it let me book then?

sheeplikessleep · 07/12/2021 11:37

I think you can book immediately if 182 days since last booster (or whenever there is a space) as that’s 6 months.

My understanding is you can arrange the booster at 5 months to schedule in the booster for 6 months. But that is supposedly being reduced to 3 …

I'm able to book from 20th December using the NHS website but I got a text message from my GP this morning to book through them and I could get an appointment tomorrow.

When was your second jab?

Mine was 7th July, so 6 months for me is around 7th January … just wondering if holding off is worth it if closer appointments suddenly get released when 3 month timeframe implemented.

Mine was 20th June so I'm only having it about a week early (I can't have it until Sunday) but if I hadn't been away on holiday I could have gone tomorrow.

I booked mine through the NHS system as soon as I could but cancelled as soon as I'd booked via my GP. That way I knew I had an appointment but now I've got a more convenient one.

CrocodilesCry · 07/12/2021 20:51

I'd probably wait and hope you can get it earlier, but you do risk that appointments could fill up quickly if there are no walk-in clinics available where you live.

I had mine booked for next week which would have been six months and three weeks but I went to a walk-in over the weekend. I've tried to cancel my booked appointment but it seems it was automatically cancelled once my booster was logged in the system.

2022HereWeCome · 07/12/2021 20:55

I booked mine weeks ago for early January which is a couple of weeks after 6 months. I'm looking to see if there's earlier alternatives but convenience of venue is more important to me at the moment. I also wonder about waning immunity next autumn before any boosters may be available so am quite keen to keep to the 6 month timescales

functionoverform · 07/12/2021 21:05

I was able to book my booster for late in Dec at the 6 month mark and the local walk ins were rigidly sticking to 6 months.

However we were in London for the weekend and all of the major hospitals were taking walk-ins for post 3 months boosters so immediately got one, as really wanted to be boosted before Christmas. It is worth checking the walk ins basically, if you cannot get an appointment you want...

I cancelled my NHS immediately after.

MustBeDueSomeBetterFeet · 07/12/2021 21:16

Fyi my husband was in the same position and been trying since the announcement of reducing time to 3 months.

Just gone online and now seems to be updated as he could book in for this week. Might be worth checking.

buckleten · 07/12/2021 21:25

First Icould book was early Jan, so I did but went and had the booster at a walk in last week at 5 months. I went to try and cancel the online one and it was already gone, must happen automatically once the system knows you have had it!

sheeplikessleep · 07/12/2021 21:33

Thanks all. I’ll keep an eye out on where my local walk ins are but there doesn’t seem any that local annoyingly. Thanks for the info, that’s helpful

The system is letting earlier bookings, I've now got in! Thanks to the posters who mentioned it

AlexandraEiffel · 07/12/2021 22:50

@sheeplikessleep I found the central system rubbish for finding the walk ins. It didn't tell me about ones I knew existed. I find social media of the nhs trust a better source

sheeplikessleep · 08/12/2021 07:57

Whoop booked for next Friday thanks all
