Smell and taste gone - argh!

Help me see sense!

I’ve had a nasty cold with laryngitis over the weekend, thanks to nursery-going son. Yesterday I very briefly lost my sense of smell - I mean for a few mins only.

This evening my sense of smell has gone and my sense of taste is severely diminished. That’s normal for a cold, isn’t it? My nose is very blocked and mucus coating my throat etc. I’ve never really suffered from anosmia before so I’m a bit freaked out!

It is normal for a cold, but it’s a,so normal for covid.

I think I would PCR if I were you

I have had an awful cold and cough for the last 10 days as has DH & the kids. I lost all taste & smell about 5 days ago. Lft’s negative and 2 pcr tests negative. Never lost my taste so profoundly before it’s horrible.

FreeBritnee · 06/12/2021 18:42

I had the same and had a negative PCR

I will PCR but I’ve literally just started a new job and need to be on the premises, I can’t wfh. Arghhh bloody nightmare

I would PCR asap, my DS has a 'nasty cold', no coughing, no temperature .. but he is Covid positive.

Not saying you are too, but you should be self isolating until you get the all clear, sorry!

Yep, you’re right. Shit arse bollocks, I’m only on my second day of new job 😩😩😩

Totally get this . I've been losing or having a reduce sense of smell and taste and for years with any kind of upper respiratory virus so it can be normal for any virus. I had a bad throat last Christmas and lost my taste - pcr negative. I always use it with a cold too. My bad sinuses affect my taste.

But sadly the done thing at the moment is to get a pcr. Thankfully drive or walk through test results are usually coming back quickly. Dp had his results within 15 hours twice this week and dd 14 hours. Postal seem to be taking longer!

Hopefully it's not covid op. Good chance it's not 💕

Thanks @Bumblebee2930 that is useful to know. I actually have a spare home test from when I ordered one too many so I was going to do that, but if walk through is quicker I might go there instead.

I’m so pissed off though. Why couldn't this have happened (properly) on Sunday?!

The loss of taste and smell from a cold was very different to my experience with covid. The loss was severe, whereas with a cold I think you still have a sense of the thing you're trying to smell, with covid there was nothing there at all.

I agree. I have no smell right now and it is so weird, like my nose has just been scrubbed totally clear. It is really disconcerting!
