Weird periods of taste change months after covid

So my whole house came down with covid mid July including 4 year old son who lost taste and smell for about a week before having it return. Since then though he has had a few different episodes where he has said that things taste different or disgusting.

For example we had a week where he wouldnt eat toast as he said it was different then he went back to eating it saying it was fine, then he had a period where he said milkshake was disgusting but he can drink it again now?!

Anyone else experienced similar?? Everytime he says something is different or not nice i panic he’s got covid again!!

I have this as does my DD. I lost taste and smell in July when I had covid. It gradually came back but not totally.

Then I had a period where certain things smelt and tasted very odd and sometimes really awful. Perfumes and shampoos smell weird as do washing powder and washing up liquid.

It's not the same every day but it does seem to be improving.

I don't know how true this is but I read that it is part of the process of neurological repair and things are out of kilter as the repair happens at different rates for different tastes and smells.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things will continue to improve as I think some people end up stuck with the degree of parosmia.

But certainly your child is not alone in experiencing this post covid and as far as I am aware it is not a sign of reinfection.

Apparently "smell training" can help where you practice smelling certain things and try to remember what they smell like. I don't know much about it but you will find info if you google it.

Its so strange. As his smell and taste did come back relatively quick but then random days he will announce that something tastes odd or isnt nice.
This morning it was orange juice. Then an hour later after eating his breakfast he said it tasted fine 🙈🙈

Hi I just searched and found your thread as my son is similar- this week (2 months after Covid) he has been saying food tastes funny, ham and beef “taste metallic” and he has odd smells we can’t smell. I’ve been checking my fridge temperature and cleaning the kitchen but now he says the advent calendar chocolates taste the same which are in a sealed packet in the living room - v confused here! How is your son now? Hope he’s ok.

It’s so bizarre!! It did panic me at first thinking he had contracted it again but I now see that this seems to happen to people afterward. I lost my taste and smell last october and when it came back certain smells were different but I didnt notice things months afterward which is what is happening here!? He is absolutely fine just the odd time he will eat something and say its stinking or the flavour is a bit different but its random and then the next day hes fine again. Such an odd symptom and side effect x

I can't drink coffee anymore since having covid in august, it tastes metallic like it did when I was pregnant.

Also get random smells of smoke.

There's a group on Facebook for parents of children with parosmia. www.facebook.com/groups/AbScentCovidKids/?ref=share

It can get quite severe. After 18months there's still lots of stuff i can't eat because it tastes so bad.
