My baby has covid

My DH tested positive at the weekend. He has mild symptoms and has been isolating as best as our tiny house allows. The rest of the family all did Pcrs as close contacts on Monday and we all got negative results.

4 month old DS had a temperature in the night. I did a LFT on him this morning which was positive. I am in a panic! I know babies are most likely to have mild symptoms and be fine but I am not thinking rationally. I have some questions which I hoped someone might be able to help with. Do we need to do another PCR on him or can we just isolate for 10 days? What warning signs should I watch out for in him? Shall I give calpol? He seems OK - but more sleepy than usual and wants to be held/fed all the time which I am of course doing. He is just so small!

Thanks so much for reading.

I'm sorry your baby is ill. I suggest you talk to your GP if you are worried.

I'm so sorry, that must be hard. Definitely speak to your doctor.

That’s really tough.
For reassurance our DD2 had it back in February and brushed it off with only a mild cough. Our DS had it at 2 weeks old having caught it in hospital being treated for Bronchiolitis. He had no symptoms but they did warn us that his temperature might spike. They advised us in hospital on what we could do in those particular circumstances but I wouldn’t want to repeat that as general advice and so definitely talk to your GP.
Fingers crossed your DS recovers quickly and is back to his normal self.

Try not to worry, hard I know, but what you’ve described is very similar to the symptoms of young babies, just very clingy and needing to be fed and held. It might be best to get another PCR test to confirm, but a postal one would be fine, as you suspect baby has it and are isolating anyway. Also keep a record of temperature and try and keep him hydrated.

So sorry Op, this sounds horrible for you all. Hope you’ve had some good support from your GP now in terms of the symptoms to watch for.

If it were me I’d do a PCR on your baby. Get one of the home ones and do it while he’s asleep/feeding. Otherwise it won’t be officially logged anywhere and if he gets another cough in a month you’d have to pcr test him again and might get a false positive.

Also good to have it on his medical records so they’re accurate for the future.

Thank you everyone.

For anyone in a similar position, I rang my GP who was super helpful and calming. DS is much better today - normal temperature and just wanting lots of cuddles. We've got home Pcrs on the way.
