Does anyone else find wearing a mask means they can't hear?

I suppose it makes sense, when others are wearing a mask, it's harder to hear them and/or you don't have the facial cues that help you understand what people are saying.

However I find that when I'm wearing a mask I feel strangely disorientated and find it harder to understand others, even if they don't have their face covered.

I'll comply with any requirements as I always have, I'm still wearing it in shops and on public transport but I have a couple of theatre trips coming up and having to wear a mask will spoil my enjoyment. It might be a price I'll have to pay but I wouldn't have bought the tickets knowing I'd have to wear a mask and I I won't be buying any more if they are compulsory (the PM doesn't yet seem sure which indoor spaces will be affected).

@shouldistop

I'm the same and they make my glasses steam up so I can't hear or see. Horrible
Me too! It's a double whammy.
@penguinwithasuitcase I'm not looking to fight but this is an extremely strange thread of people who wear masks because they aren't exempt but have terrible communication disorders when they do.

Personally would say you are all exempt from mask wearing and should just crack onl
I am not exempt
I just find it harder to hear what people say when I am wearing a mask. The very fact that this is the case surely demonstrates that I AM in fact wearing one.

visitingagain · 28/11/2021 09:35

I think you are exempt @Hoppinggreen if it causes you distress, or for people on here who can't hear or find their balance affected.

TheVampiresWife · 28/11/2021 09:42

@visitingagain oh give over. How is this an anti mask thread when everyone on it is talking about their experiences of mask wearing? Stop being so goady.

visitingagain · 28/11/2021 09:46

@TheVampiresWife I just think the title of the thread is misleading

RichTeaRichTea · 28/11/2021 09:59

Misleading how?

How? It's simply asking if others find that masks affect hearing, as they do for the OP?

Nobody has said they're not wearing them (often despite what would clearly be classed as exemptions). In fact many on this thread should be applauded for wearing masks even though it causes them difficulties.

Please stop looking for reasons to get het up where there are none.

The trouble is that the abuse some people got or fear of abuse if not wearing a mask can possibly cause just as much distress as wearing one.
3WildOnes · 28/11/2021 11:43

@visitingagain how is the title misleading?! It asks a question.
As I said upthread I struggle to hear people when I am wearing a mask. It doesn’t particularly make sense so it is comforting to me that other people experience the same. I am not exempt from wearing a mask and will continue to wear one when required to do so. It does mean I won’t go to certain places like art galleries or the theatre because it becomes too much like hard work.

Somebodylikeyew · 28/11/2021 11:44

Jesus, visitingagain. Can’t you go and start a fight in a paper bag or something and leave us discussing the perfectly clear thread and title? Just scroll on by.

Georgyporky · 28/11/2021 19:40

I wear a visor. A mask + glasses + hearing aids is a recipe for disaster. (To say nothing of earrings.)
A hearing aid pinged out the first time I wore a mask; £4,000 per pair replacement cost.

Bollocks am I exempt! I struggle to hear people properly, it’s mildly annoying so I ask them to repeat what they said Hardly a medical condition
CHIShandler · 28/11/2021 19:42

I find it really hard to hear when I'm wearing a mask! No idea why.
