Regaining sense of smell and taste

I lost my smell and taste completely when I had covid a few weeks ago. It has started to come back now, a little at first and this increased. I can smell strong smells (better in the evening than the morning) and taste things with strong flavors.
Both are still quite dull. What have others done to get these back? I’ve heard smelling essential oils can help (I’ve ordered the ones people recommend).

If your smell and taste have done back filly, when did this happen and how gradually? What did you do to help it.

took good quality zinc (capsules) during and after covid, still do now a month later. Sense of smell and taste was barely affected, had weird smoke smell sensation for about two weeks afterwards, but that is now gone and all is back to normal.

I am now 3 months post-Covid and my sense of smell isn’t back properly. It is much better than the no smell I had for three weeks but everything is dull and some things I still miss completely. So yes any suggestions please!

All tips welcome!

Oh god yes please any suggestions, it's so depressing!

I lost mine about a week ago and my sense of smell is very slowly returning but not taste, so far. I can tell if something is sweet or salty but that’s it (think it’s because actual tastebuds aren’t affected). I’ve always had an extremely keen sense of smell so I’ll be upset if it never returns! I’m taking a multivitamin now but I wasn’t when I started with Covid. Are there any studies that show zinc is helpful?

I’m 6 weeks on & my taste is about 80% but my smell about 20% ☹️ Some days are better than others!

I feel grateful my taste is mostly OK & I don’t mind my DD’s nappies anymore but I do miss my smell! 😭

My friend said to smell essential oils twice a day, 4 different smells. Take really deep sniffs. I’ve started to do it this week.. 🙏🏼

Apparently you can help yourself by 're-training' your sense of smell:

Just ordered some essential oils - it can’t hurt I suppose!

I've been taking zinc. Positive was 3 weeks ago, today I have noticed I can suddenly taste and smell everything relatively normally.

How much zinc are you taking? Where did you get it from?

I miss my sense of smell. Following fr ideas.

I've had no smell for months and about 60% taste. It's quite dangerous. I can't smell things burning when cooking and I wouldn't be able to smell a gas leak. I can't smell my favourite perfume. It is miserable. I can taste but not the full flavour of anything. I would love to get these back before Christmas. I have been doing the essential oil training for a few weeks with clove, rose, eucalyptus and lemon but that's not doing anything yet. My dd has seen something where you burn an orange, mix it with brown sugar and eat it. Has anyone done this? Seems an odd thing to do and may stink the house out(not that I'll care about that Grin) but I am getting desperate!

I had an acupuncture treatment and I think it helped. I regained some sense of smell and taste but then it went again. I’ll see if it has the same effect next time and report back.

I do also think it’s better after I’ve taken vitamins. I take a mix though so hard to tell which. I’ve heard zinc recommended for loss of smell to someone pre pandemic.

Hmm. Would smell nice I think. Strange idea but what is there to lose? Let us know how it goes!

SilverGlassHare · 05/12/2021 22:02

My sense of smell is about 80% back now, my sense of taste maybe 60-70%. My sense of taste has really improved over the past 2-3 days. I had covid about 3 weeks ago.

SilverGlassHare · 05/12/2021 22:04

I had to see a GP as I had chest pain (turned out to be costochondritis) and mentioned the loss of smell/taste and he said only time will help.

Firstshoes · 09/12/2021 08:36

Well the burning orange thing didn't work for meXmas Sad. I've been taking lots of vits including zinc but nothing's working at the moment. I'll just have to persevere with the smell training. It is good to hear positive stories of smell returning though so even though it's been months I am staying hopeful.

Suspiciousmind20 · 09/12/2021 14:42

In the last week I was able to vaguely smell a Lilly, I can smell my cleaning stuff a bit and even the compost bin. It’s not strong and it comes and goes but I do think it’s improving slowly. Fingers crossed for you all.

Shame about the burnt orange Firstshoes. Sad
