Sense of smell and taste

For anyone who's had a mild case of Covid, how long did it take for your sense of taste and smell to return?

I started feeling unwell on Wednesday, got a positive PCR on Thursday and realised I couldn't taste or smell on Friday.

I think I'm beginning to feel better

If you had your sense of smell/taste affected, zinc is the best supplement to take. I never had this symptom but was supplementing with zinc for months prior to getting ill and took an even higher daily dose during covid. I'm also not jabbed.

8 days in here and been without proper taste/smell for all those 8 days.
Everything tastes super sweet, my tongue feels like it’s sucking sugar.
Can’t smell a thing, held a bottle of olbas oil to my nose and nothing. I’m finding the taste thing hardest

It's been exactly a week since I lost my taste and smell. They both started to come back today (it comes and goes) Very faint but I'm very happy.

Suspiciousmind20 · 02/11/2021 16:20

I can just about smell my perfume very faintly now and taste a little more - just a vague taste. That’s about a week in I think. Coffee still smells awful though. Like it’s off.

FVFrog · 02/11/2021 16:43

I am 6 weeks on, all ok apart from sense of smell not fully back

Mumto3thatsme · 02/11/2021 16:43

Day 9 and I can smell olbas oil right under my nose 🎉

kessiebird · 02/11/2021 18:19

Positive test 8 days ago. Profound loss of taste and smell for four to five days. Started to return in dribs and drabs, it's about 50% now.

I felt like you, worried it was gone for ages. On the plus side, I lost 4lb between not snacking on junk and generally feeling ill. I glugged fresh orange juice which I don't normally like and started high strength zinc and Vit D3 which I am still taking.

I have covid at the moment and have no taste or smell at all. DH gave me a slice of pizza covered in chillis and I couldn’t taste a thing. I hope everything returns to normal by Christmas Day.

@Appliancedesparation

I'm a year on and my sense if smell has never returned, I either smell nothing or a weird chemical smell. Taste is 80% back but there are some foods that now taste disgusting to me. I had a v mild case of covid. Sorry!
@Appliancedesparation I want cry reading this.
OneMorePieceofCheese · 02/11/2021 20:10

I had chilli for dinner this evening. I'm not normally a big fan of spicy food but I wanted to taste something!

Unfortunately I still couldn't taste the food but the chilli still burned my mouth. Worst of both worlds!

I had Covid for the 1st time in March 2020.
While my sense of taste wasn't wonderful it was ok but I lost all sense of smell. iI gradually returned over 15 months.
I was so excited to smell Autumn in our local park and woods recently. I could smell incense and candles, coffee and cake.
I got Covid for the 2nd time last week.

I now have no sense of taste or smell at all, and I had ordered loads of lovely ingredients for meals as DW had been reading recipes books.

I am so fed up.,,,

Appliancedesparation · 03/11/2021 07:36

Sorry @bevelino, am sure the vast majority recover fairly soon - the odds are in your favour!

OneMorePieceofCheese · 04/11/2021 09:29

I'm on day 8 of Covid, and I think I may be getting a tiny bit of smell back.

I could faintly smell some mixed spice and cloves earlier. Last night when I had dinner, I could discern between sweet, salty and citrusy, so I'm quietly hopeful!

Day 15 and I reckon I've got about 10% smell back and 20% taste.

Have awful diarrhoea - and have no idea if that's lingering Covid or I've eaten something rotten because I can't smell it! Confused

I'm also not jabbed.

@mrsnoname I assume you couldn’t have the jab for medical reasons?

Timeisavirtue · 10/11/2021 23:06

Lost some of my taste and smell due to sinus infection, thankfully it only lasted 2/3 days. Was starting to panic I’d had COVID. Luckily I tested negative... I cooked a roast on Sunday and couldn’t really taste it... it pissed me off then because I’d been looking forward to it...

OneMorePieceofCheese · 02/01/2022 17:38

I'm now about 8 weeks post infection.

I would say I have smell and taste back to about 60% but for the last week or so I have a smoky smell all the time, which can be distracting enough to stop me getting to sleep.

I thought my taste was ok until recently I couldn't taste the orange in some chocolate, and - the killer - didn't mind the parsnips (devil's veg) at Sunday lunch.

I also have facial dermatitis that just won't clear up, which I suspect related to covid. The gift that keeps giving!

I feel your pain cheese oh to be able to taste cheese or anything else properly.
I had covid mid November and I did recover some taste, but it's gone again and food tastes soapy.
I have a horrible soapy taste in my mouth all the time. I never would have thought that lack of taste would be so debilitatingSad
Smell is hit and miss, but I smelt a musty roast dinner smell a few times at night (we'd not had a roast for days)
