Loosing smell, but not taste?

Does anyone know if you can lose your smell only with covid? Or is it always smell and taste together?

I've had what I thought was a bad cold I caught from my daughter. Started out with a scratchy throat, but then went into a stuffy & then very runny nose and a slightly tickly cough. I've had it for about 4 days. I've been soaking Olbas oil on cotton pads and leaving them on either side of my pillow. I noticed that the smell was very strong the first few nights, but when I came up last night I couldn't smell it anymore even though I'd freshly doused the cotton pads. This is strange, because I had come up from baking a pumpkin cake with lots of cinnamon and had smelled that earlier.

But this morning I can't smell the Olbas oil on the cotton pad at all, even right under my nose (which isn't as stuffy as it has been previously).

I had this, lost my smell but still had my taste. I didn't even know that was possible! But had all the same symptoms as you and my smell still isn't 100%

I currently have covid, day 4 since confirmed with PCR and I lost my smell yesterday but can still taste. No idea if it will stay that way!

Whataday21 · 30/10/2021 09:52

A cough is one of the 3 symptoms that requires a PCR, so I'd book one in for this morning.

Booka pcr test

I have covid currently. Lost my sense of smell two days ago but can still taste. I'd recommend getting a PCR and not entirely trusting lateral flows. My lateral flow was positive, but my brother, my friend and my son's all negative and PCRs positive (these are unrelated cases of covid to mine. Aside from my son.)

I just lost of sense of smell. My sense of taste was always fine.

It would be sensible to get a PCR test.

crazywhippet · 30/10/2021 10:07

Yep, I've got it atm, tested positive last week. No cough but I have lost my sense of smell, but can still taste things. (My youngest had a negative LFT, but positive PCR, so I would say not to rely on LTFs if possible)

cheeseismydownfall · 30/10/2021 10:10

Yes - I am on day 10. Lost smell completely around day 4 but haven't lost taste (albeit things don't taste as strongly, presumably due to lack of smell).

somewhereoverthechipshop · 30/10/2021 10:18

I have covid right now confirmed by PCR and isolating. I have lost my sense of smell completely but taste is still fine.

tigger1001 · 30/10/2021 10:19

My son had covid a few weeks ago and only lost his sense of smell and not his taste. Still not back yet

middleager · 30/10/2021 10:20

Get a PCR.
When I had Covid, I could taste a little, but I couldn't smell a thing - not even TCP right under my nose.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 30/10/2021 10:20

Thanks all. This is very good to know. Oddly enough I can now smell the Olbas oil again. I was still in bed when I first posted and have since got up to go to the loo and could smell my perfume on my PJ's (yes sometimes I wear perfume in my Pj's around the house lol). So came back to smell the oil and could smell it again. Not as strongly as before, but I could definitely smell it. Will book a PCR though. Never had one yet. I'm unvaccinated, so half of me is hoping this is covid, because if this is it for me I'll take it. I assumed I'd be much much worse which was why I assumed it was just a cold

Have you tried smelling other things other than olbas oil? I always lose my sense of smell (and taste) with a cold, but of course a test should be done to rule covid out.

I also have sinus issues which cause me temporary changes to my smell and taste. Sometimes it can be heightened and other times dulled.

Losing smell and/or taste is a common symptom with many viruses, health issues, or caused by certain medications, mouthwash can change smell or taste as can lozenges! Also smoking can alter taste. It's not just covid but of course a test should be done.

I was under the impression with covid you lose smell or taste with no bunged up nose. It's just completely random.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 30/10/2021 11:16

Thanks all. I've done a LFT and it's negative. Smell has seemingly resumed back to normal now. But the Olbas oil thing was just so strange when I had the bottle directly under my nose this morning and couldn't smell a thing! I could kind of feel the tingly vapours, but no smell. It's back now, and I'm negative. Kind of gutted what I had wasn't covid lol. Just want it over and done with really.

When you say your taste was fine do you mean you could stil detect flavours etc? Like completely normal?
