Why aren't people pcr testing?

Spoken to two friends with dc in my child's year last few days. One child has had a temp, sore throat etc...and they have just been doing lft tests, the other child was off last week with a cold and bad cough and I said did they have a pcr and they said no, we just kept isn't the lfts. My dc from the same year has been off today, woke up with sore throat, achy, cold but no temp/cough/loss of taste/smell. I'm probably thinking ill get him a pcr anyway. I don't understand why people aren't getting the pcr tests especially when they have a cough and temp? Have people just given up on them?

You dont need time off to do LFT at home and PCR tests can also be sent to your home. So why would your job be at risk from doingnthose. What you mean is if the child is actually positive you would need time off, so youd rather not know.

Its not one up man ship it is calling you out for saying its too difficult to test your child.

SuperstarDog · 05/10/2021 09:46

I think people mean when they’re waiting for a test result. So if you order to home on Monday, arrives Tuesday, results Wednesday at earliest, that’s 3 days missed if you stay home like you should. Of course people should, but can you not see how this would be difficult if it’s happening a lot?

Treblebass · 05/10/2021 09:47

Not at all. It’s when you are repeatedly needing to take your asymptomatic child for PCR tests, which involves a day off work. (The head requests you pick them up in the school day as opposed to waiting). She repeatedly emails requesting you DO NOT use a postal test (all the capitals). When you have multiple children at the same primary school it is never ending. So you have not called me out on anything, but you crack on with your disdain amongst families who struggle financially “poor them” I’ll call you out on that.

Covidworries · 05/10/2021 09:47

You dont need to stay home if waitingnresults as a clise contact only if you have symptoms

But young kids especially often have a new cough or temp every other week. Can you really not appreciate that it is very difficult for working parents?

Covidworries · 05/10/2021 09:50

Lol so you arent testing because the head says it should be at a testing centre. So happy to ignore the request to test but cant possibel order a home test becaus ethe head said so.

Do you think CEV families have bottemless wallets and dont also struggle financially?

Toomuch2019 · 05/10/2021 09:51

Because the test centre 20 mins away has closed. I'm not driving 40 mins for a probable cold if I've not got one of the 3 main symptoms (when then obviously I would)

Covidworries · 05/10/2021 09:51

Im not saying it isnt difficult but whats your answer kill off all the CEV children ? That make life easier wont it.

Treblebass · 05/10/2021 09:51

I do not live close by to the testing centre it involves a day off work for myself. A day off work is actually quite a big deal, especially when it happens frequently. That’s not too hard to understand.

Covidworries · 05/10/2021 09:52

So order a home test if close contact or have a covid symptom.

Treblebass · 05/10/2021 09:56

I will do this from now on yes. I will not be doing daily LFT though, and the head will have to wait for the result even if it does take longer. No doubt she will be there with clipboard and the emails with ALL the capitals but I’ll just have to put up with that at pick up.

SuperstarDog · 05/10/2021 10:18

Of course not. My kids have had lots of tests, they stay off school whilst waiting for the results and have only gone back with a negative test.

I’m just saying I can sympathise with working parents, there was a poster the other day saying she knows she going to lose her job if she keeps taking time off for it. Of course that shouldn’t happen, but in smaller companies especially, it does happen. I’m just saying it’s difficult for people and I don’t have any answers but I can appreciate people feeling frustrated.

Noogar · 05/10/2021 10:29

They need to speed up the PCR test times. Needs to be an overnight thing.

Noogar · 05/10/2021 10:30

@SuperstarDog yep my workplace are getting annoyed with me having time off to wait for test results. I'm splitting it with DH but still, it's a test everytime LO gets a cough..pretty much every week.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/10/2021 10:31

Our results took 17hrs last week.
Covidworries · 05/10/2021 10:31

Well to be fair it was an overnight thing for results. Until the number of positives got so large.
Of course we arent seeing the full numbers on the data because only first infections get counted in data. So all the people getting reinfected dont get added to the numbers for positive cases, hospitalisations or deaths.

Noogar · 05/10/2021 10:34

Well to be fair it was an overnight thing for results. Until the number of positives got so large. this is true. And they did pretty well to get it up and running.

It takes me out of work for 2 days - one to do the test then if I don't get it back by 7 o clock its too late to go into work (half day or late start not an option, I'm either in work that day or not)

Noogar · 05/10/2021 10:34

@Aroundtheworldin80moves that's great!

EvilPea · 05/10/2021 10:36

Didn’t you get the memo.
It’s over now?!

In all seriousness, My dds secondary are not giving out any LFTs, no mention of them carrying on. Not pushing getting a PCR if you had symptoms, not telling you if your a close contact so should PCR.
Whilst some parents will be doing their own thing, not all will. Some do need that nudge.

PiglingBland1 · 05/10/2021 10:41

Because it's the time of year that there are always colds about. People don't test and self-isolate for cold or flu. In my circles a lot of people feel its the testing and self isolating causing more disruption than covid now. Many people have had covid now and have had worse colds.

SuperstarDog · 05/10/2021 10:43

Our secondary did tests in school the first few weeks they were back. Then they sent enough tests home til first week of November, followed by an email to say at the start of November, kids will be given another set of LFTs to last til the start of January. The email also said they expect kids with symptoms to have a PCR.

FluffyTeddyBear · 05/10/2021 11:00

Because school isn’t sending them home! If they did, parents would do a pcr.

In my view. That’s what the school should be doing, to try and keep them and the staff safe. It’s what others in the area are doing

They were terrible last year, and seem to be continuing down that vain this year. It’s a large school with a huge catchment, so to me, they have more of a responsibility to try and contain it so it doesn’t spread onto the wider contacts (siblings at different schools, football clubs, guides etc). But that doesn’t seem to be the case. It’s just considered over now

Lennybenny · 05/10/2021 11:27
@Narutocrazyfox

No testing hasnt stopped.

Please PCR test for symptoms. Yes it could be negative BUT you wont know without a test.

Testing means most cases are picked up. Which reduces the risk of others contracting covid. Doesnt remove all risk but does reduce.

For CEV families our lives are literally in the hands of others. Shielding has stopped but the risk hasnt changed. Testing is one of the only mitigations and safety nets we have.

So a slight inconvinence to you and your child will likely put our child on life support.
Tbf that's the same with every other bug going round, any bug could be potentiallyharmful so why should anyone else be held responsible for your household.
We'll pcr when it becomes an obvious issue. Until then it's lft and going to school and work.

Covidworries · 05/10/2021 11:28

What other illness has caused CEV to have to shield for over 12months. do explain?
