Strong Positive lateral tests and symptoms but negative PCR

As the title be says really, I've heard from there seems to be a worrying increase in this. DH1 wasn't feeling well but off, tired, n dizzy etc last weekend after two days did a lateral and then PCR all negative.
I'm double jabbed but had a head that lasted all week and I don't uselly get them a bit off food and a slight tickle in through and a tad of fatigue. Negative tests also. So I assume must be done other bug.
Then 3 days ago son two complains of feeling bit tired, then next day dizziness after school looks flushed and a little warm to touch, I thought I will do a lateral flow test and it was positive.
So book PCR test but that came back negative, did another lateral and still a strong positive.

So either 3 out of 5 of us (suspect husband may be getting it in last few hours) has had it this week but PCRs not picked it up for some reason. What is with that? Anyone else have similar experiences?

School has said to send him back but I'm not comfortable being 99 percent sure he has it. (From what I read a false positive especially multiple is very rare for laterals and to be clear he had not had any good or drink hour or so before tests)

I tried ringing the helpline but the man was clueless. He put me on hold to ask about it, then came back and said I can ignore the 4 positive LFTs as only PCR matters. He also said the only important symptoms are the original 3. So I wasn't reassured by what he said!

I had my PCR result - negative.
So I had Friday 2 x positive LFT, negative PCR
Saturday positive LFT
Sunday positive LFT, negative PCR

@earlydoors42

I had my PCR result - negative. So I had Friday 2 x positive LFT, negative PCR Saturday positive LFT Sunday positive LFT, negative PCR
So 4 positive LFT? but all negative PCRs Confused

Do you have symtoms, and has anyone else in the family tested positive?

earlydoors42 · 04/10/2021 07:35

Just had a 5th positive LFT.

I have a bit if a cold and mild sore throat. My son tested positive last Monday - been in his bedroom since. A friend is also isolating and I saw and hugged him inside my house 1 or 2 days before his positive test.

I don't know what I'm meant to do.

How frustrating. In your shoes I’d just be assuming I have covid and backdate the isolation to when you first felt symptoms.

Frazzled2207 · 04/10/2021 09:19

@Itisasecret

I think something is up with the PCR tests or the cynic in me would think they have been 'tuned down'. COVID is ripping through our local schools. many are off with this flu but negative PCR. There are many members of staff and children I am aware of who are symptomatic, strong repeated LTF but negative PCR.

It feels like the PCR has been toned down to hide the true rate or there is a major issue somewhere. This is happening too much.

Wow very worrying. Maybe there’s a new strain circulating that the pcrs are struggling to pick up?!
Changemusthappen · 04/10/2021 09:31

Similar situation here. 3 x positive lft and 2 negative pcrs. Just spoke to 119 and they seemed surprised and had to speak to someone ‘higher up’. Came back that we should believe the pcr and send dc back to school. I double checked the symptom list and that hasn’t changed either. Frankly this seems very strange, I’m wondering if there is a new strain that isn’t being detected by pcrs.

@Catcheronthesly

I’ve just had a second negative PCR, so I’m thinking the positive LFT’s might be showing up because I do have a cold and it might be similar to Covid???
No that's not how they work, they can only pick up Covid-19, not other viruses. If you have a positive LFT, as far as I can understand, you most likely have Covid.

It does seem like something is going on with the PCRs - maybe a bad batch? I doubt it's a new variant, they're checked a lot in this country and most places are 100% Delta now as it's so infectious.

Noogar · 04/10/2021 09:42

Maybe there's something going on at the PCR testing place

whatswithtodaytoday · 04/10/2021 09:42

A more cynical person might suggest it would be good for the government to have PCRs not working properly as they avoid everyone staying at home when cases shoot up, which would be bad for the economy...

SummerHouse · 04/10/2021 09:56

This is interesting. I guess people should use common sense over PCR but we have been so conditioned to follow the rulz that it seems wrong not to. I am waiting on a result at the mo. Three days and counting.......

The problem is that each PCR test costs the NHS £20+ so if they're not actually working it's wasting massive amounts of money.

Personally I think if you test +ve twice on LFTs you should regard it as a true +ve and self-isolate (and not bother with a PCR and the shite T and T system - the PHE random testing system could be used to monitor new variants).

A close family friend tested positive on lft. But negative on PCR. My child went to visit them. A few days later we are all infected , plus the family members household and anyone who had been in contact with them. All took a PCR and not positive.

Randomsummer · 05/10/2021 09:40

After 14 positive LFT and 2 negative PCR for my daughter, my son has now developed a cough and temperature, we are now waiting for a PCR to be delivered. It could be a coincidence but it’s funny how she is testing positive and 5 days later my son starts showing symptoms. If I had sent my daughter into school she could have infected so many people.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 05/10/2021 09:59

Interesting to see this thread! I have received a negative PCR this morning but have two positive LFTs under my belt. DS is strongly positive on the LFT, still waiting for his PCR. I have cough, headache, nausea, sore throat so not sure if I just have cold or if my PCR was incorrect.

chalamet · 08/10/2021 18:59

I’ve had this twice with kids in my class. Symptoms and positive LFT but negative PCR and they’re back in. Half my class are poorly with some symptom or another and it’s just hit me. 🤷‍♀️ as long as the PCR is negative we just carry on!
