covid in schools

My kids school has about 25 kids off with covid and 3 members of staff. As I understand it siblings of infected children can attend school and children can attend if they have positive cases in their household . Failure to attend school can result in a fine. My friend is a TA and her 3 kids and hubby have it and she has been testing daily but as yet she is still negative and she has had 3 still negative PCRS because 3 of the positive cases are in her class but she has been told she still must attend work as normal.

My neices senior school closed yesterday for 10 days as the head is insisting that if you live in the same house as a positive case you must not attend school (if you are a student) and the same goes for staff (if your children or partner have it) you must not come to work.

Just interested in what other schools are doing to protect the spread. PHE says that siblings are allowed to school and likewise adults who live with a positive case can attend work providing they have been double jabbed.

It's not schools op this is the new stragety!
Non of us know who has it, I suspect so many pupils don't take lateral flows twice a week..

Let's live with it.. No access to NHS.. No fuel ect...

8 cases in my DD’s class. Her class has now been segregated from the rest of the school and she sits separately to others in wraparound.

At my school we had over 40 cases in one year group. PHE advised to send them home and ask for a PCR before returning. We are now LFTing them every two days.

Oh and as the previous poster said, schools have no control over mitigation measures. We are directed from PHE but only if the cases increase quickly.

Omg I think segregating the year in wraparound is worse than just letting it run through the school

We're back to isolating in home contacts, and requesting masks in corridors and on buses.
Local Authority recommended by PHE.

DS large secondary in south east, year 11 more than 80 kids off last week which is about 25% or so! Confused

They are back to mask wearing, and are not allowed in assembly which they are pretty chuffed about!

My ds would like to be home like half his friends. I on the other hand, will be very pissed off if they shut schools. We really just need to get on with it. Most people are vaccinated. We are only aware of the cases because we're testing....if we weren't testing, people would just have coughs and colds and still go about their lives. Its annoying now.

100% agree @Lennybenny. For almost every single child, catching sars-cov2 is like any other autumn/winter cold. Time to let schools run through these seasons just as they used to and not necessarily worry about spread. Colds/coronavirus will never go away so we have to drawn a line under this at some point. I’m ready, who else?!

Contacts of cases dont need to isolate if they are under 18 and 6 months old or are double vaccinated, they are "encouraged" to get a PCR test instead, they dont need to isolate while they wait for the PCR. If you get a cluster of positive cases you call PHE who will presumably tell you what to do depending on who you speak to.

Twice weekly lateral flow tests are advised but not compulsary.

Its the new strategy.

Our school is closed due to extreme covid and we are homeschooling, im really glad they closed it instead of making us all go in like the government seems to want us to do.

Last week there were an handful of cases in my dc's year and none in her class. On Saturday she tested positive and by Monday we had a letter from the school to say they had had a large number of positive cases over the weekend across 3 year groups and a move to masks in corridors.

but waxononwaxof (cool name btw) its really awful for our vulnerable teachers and parents, just like giving up on them and I dont want to do that. Id rather we all homeschooled for a week and got us all a pcr to keep them safe? surely thats worth it!

Im more concerned atm with the vomiting bug thats flying through the school. I really hate being sick.

Yes same @LorenzoVonMatterhorn - give me covid anyday although apparently that can make you sick too so 😩

We are at a one form entry village school. All good so far. Probably are a few cases but school is running happily as normal so far. A real relief my DD has had a normal first month settling in!

Been lots of cases in my children's school but all seem to be in the older classes. Year 2 and up.

I've tested both mine today who are year 1 & nursery. Both negative.

I'm not worried as last October DP got it and me and our girls didn't catch it off him and as far as we are aware we haven't had it.

I'm more concerned like a previous poster has said about the D&V bugs going around but touch wood we haven't had anything but a slight cold yet!

Theres a really bad cold that's circulating amongst my circle of friends and family, floored for at least 48hrs in some cases longer. Every single one testing negative on PCR. Some have had covid previously(some pre jab) and are much more affected by this bad cold that's going round than they were covid. As soon as they feel well enough they can and will be expected too return to work and school, yet with covid for which for them has been significantly milder they needed to stay home for 10 -14 days, as well did some of their families. The response compared to other similar viruses are completely disproportionate.

They do twice weekly LFT and wear masks in corridors though

Nothing much. Lots of cases but just back in masks (ie the staff wear them and try to insist that the kids do, but most won't). I'm surprised to test negative every time. So sick of it.

We have approx 10-15 confirmed positives at the moment - none of the parents are informed so wouldn’t know also…

Sounds typical of schools all over England. Many aren’t saying how many cases they have and lots of parents aren’t bothering to test their children.

I wonder what proportion are doing LFT or PCR tests

When people say high figures there must be a fair few asymptomatic in there

We aren't telling families about how many cases there are now, so you'd likely not know there are any at your children's school unless you were friends with the parents or extra measures were in place.

8% of our students had Covid last week. Parents probably think there are zero cases.
