Or perfume...

If there was any petrol left round here I'd ask DH to wave a can of it under my nose just to triple check.

I can taste a bit, but smell...nothing!

It's freaking me out.

I tested positive on Tuesday.

What is everybody else's experiences?

Is it preferable to losing your sense of taste? How do those of you who've lost both get on?

@middleager

wonderstuff (fellow Stuffies' fan here) Grin

A blocked nose was present throughout the early days.

Good luck with the test.

Frl how odd!

Thank you. My test came back negative but I'm not convinced. This is quite different to my usual bout of cold,it usually manifests in my throat and ears:,very rarely on my chest. This has moved very rapidly to making my test quite tight. That plus the loss of taste and smell...who knows anymore
middleager · 26/09/2021 22:23

That does sound suspect, with the loss of taste and smell.

I hadn't had any kind of lingering cough/chest infection since 1997 (seriously!) and this eight legged Covid machine has gone for the lungs and I'm coughing so hard of a night. Like you, a cold doesn't normally hit my chest/lungs.

I couldn't smell olbas oil. It was weird, I could feel my nose tingling, but couldn't actually smell it

SumAndSubstance · 26/09/2021 22:58

I had that with vaporub earlier. My nose tingled, but I couldn’t smell it at all!

Faircastle · 29/09/2021 13:07

After losing my sense of smell completely on day 4, I'm now testing it every morning by sniffing a strongly lemon-scented shower gel. Today I think maybe I can detect a hint of lemon fragrance? Although it might be the power of suggestion.

Anyone want to take part in a drug trial?

middleager · 29/09/2021 14:17

Today (day 10) and I can smell a little. The strong perfume I couldn't smell is now a faint smell, but it's there.

Taste still isn't right, but again, it's getting there.

middleager · 29/09/2021 14:18
That's promising!

13 days in and no smell or taste at all. I'm also fully vaccinated and have been really ill with it. I have had a blocked nose throughout too.

middleager · 29/09/2021 14:31

Sorry to hear that jenny.

I think the endless blocked nose was the worst symptom. No matter how much I blew it, it wouldn't shift.

jenny5000 · 29/09/2021 15:04

It's the incessant coughing for me. Hurts my chest and gives me a headache Sad

Faircastle · 29/09/2021 16:08

I'm on day 8 and I don't feel as though I'm on the mend yet. Still headachy, aching all over, shooting pains in arms and legs, cough. I feel shaky and my head feels swimmy.
I'm supposed to be going back to work on Monday; if I feel like this then it's going to be challenging.

PhiRhoSigma · 29/09/2021 17:24

Day 10. Chanel no. 5 and TCP came back yesterday, today I can smell any of my perfumes, plus bleach, cleaning stuff etc. But not my cat's bad breath, small mercies.
Also double vaxxed and have felt pretty rubbish for the past few days, mainly due to high temperature. Am surprised at how many are getting symptomatic infection who are vaxxed. Both my daughters also have it right now (got it from the youngest from school 😡, she is also vaxxed).

Flowers to everyone who is suffering.

@CleopatrasBeautifulNose

This is the thing I dread the most if when I catch it (partly cos I think it is more likely than actually dying and not everyone gets it back). I don't want to not be able to smell my dh or dc, inhaling them when hugging gives me a profound sense of contentment. I know when my kids are poorly by their smell, I cook with my sense of smell, it's just so vital to me every day. Hope you get yours back soon op and pp who are also deprived of it currently
My DM lost her sense of smell as a 16 year old when she fell off a horse and got concussion. She is now 74 and has never been able to smell since. She always says she feels a bit sad about the fact that she has never smelt either her DH (my DF) or us her children.
middleager · 29/09/2021 18:26

That's really sad, Brigitt.

I didn't realise how much I relied on smell until it was gone. Even cooking dinner tonight, I needed it.

To have not been able to smell my newborn's heads would have been hard (nappies, I could pass on).

If your livelihood depends on it (chef, cleaner, perfume tester, fire officer, sewerage inspector?) then I guess you're in trouble.

I put some olbas oil on a tissue as I've got a blocked nose. Couldn't smell a thing but my eyes were watering from the vapour. Very odd

bigbaggyeyes · 29/09/2021 18:35

With all the coughing and sneezing I had to send dh out for some tena lady. Add that to the loss of smell I'm paranoid I stink of 'old lady piss' and I can't smell it Grin

middleager · 29/09/2021 18:37

It's surreal isn't it?
I can't explain it to others.
What a strange virus.

I lost both smell and taste. They returned very very very slowly. Six months ish..

Izzy24 · 29/09/2021 20:37

I lost my sense of taste and smell. Even worse, after a couple of weeks all I could smell was petrol fumes. It last for about a month. Yuk.

jenny5000 · 29/09/2021 23:32

My friend very recently got her sense of taste back - a year after she had covid!

ClaryFairchild · 30/09/2021 08:07

With a cold I usually take fenugreek capsules to help clear it - have you tried it with Covid? (Sitting here in Australia and reading this thread with dread!).

herbaceous · 30/09/2021 13:35

Can I join you on the smell-free bench?

Day 11 today, which I'd been looking forward to as 'freedom day', but am still poleaxed. The fatigue is so bizarre, isn't it. Jelly legs, buzzing head... does anyone get sudden 'wobbles', almost like you're standing on a shifting surface? But inside?

And feel so glum. Not sure whether that's a symptom, or just a result of not being able to do a bloody thing.

Can't smell anything either, and didn't realise how smelling was one of my favourite hobbies...

Faircastle · 30/09/2021 14:11

@herbaceous - I'm not getting full-on vertigo but certainly feel weak, shaky and unsteady.

Yesterday my sense of smell began to return, so I only had 4 days where it was totally absent. I can only smell some things some of the time, but that's an improvement on nothing.
